Class Content: This class is about using alcohol inks to create the feeling of water or abstract things that grow in water. Doesn’t have to be all blue! An outline of the class content will be distributed at the beginning of each class along with sources of all supplies. In class, we’ll talk briefly about the different substrates that can be used, how to preserve your work, the pros and cons of the different weights of Yupo and Nara Paper, and the best ways to purchase the paper depending on your needs.
Kathy will bring sample paintings to show various techniques and do a few demos during the day. Individual art supply set-ups for each individual in the class will be provided. Other equipment used to create different effects will be available for you to try. There will be a selection of colors at each individual’s desk as well as over 100 additional colors you may select from a provided supply of inks that will assist students to personalize their work.
There will be a color chart to facilitate choosing colors that appeal to you. We will be completing 4 to 5 paintings in a range of sizes which, if time allows, will be coated with several coats of spray varnish to protect and preserve your artwork.
A few hair dryers and air compressors will be available for classroom use. If you bring one from home, it should be a low air blower. The best I have found on the market is the Revlon RV444 which retails for around $25.00.
Supply List: ALL SUPPLIES INCLUDED! Great class for those who want to try this new technique without buying a large amount of art supplies. Art supply Set-ups of needed paper, ink and equipment will be provided.
To protect your clothing artists may want to bring an apron or wear old clothes. Bring a piece of cardboard (roughly 20×26) to tape your art to prior to spraying the varnish and to transport it home.
Bring your lunch and drinks, dessert will be provided. Email Kathy if you are gluten free or allergic to pecans or walnuts. 865-660-6400 info@GracehillArt.com
Biography: Kathy Janke works in several mediums, primarily alcohol inks and pine needle basketry. What she loves about alcohol inks are the vibrancy of the color and the utter spontaneity of the medium. For the most part, she rarely uses a brush. Kathy sells her artwork on her website and at art shows. The Townsend art gallery Gracehill Fine Art and Basketry will be opening in April 2024.
