Class Content: Discover the rich, layered beauty of encaustic painting in this one-day workshop with artist Deborah Llewellyn. Perfect for beginners and experienced artists alike, this hands-on class explores the fusion of molten wax with mixed media techniques to create luminous, textured works of art.
We’ll begin with a focus on safety and studio setup, then dive into the materials— including how to make your own encaustic medium and understand the different wax-based products we’ll use. Students will learn how to prep and tape panels, apply base layers of wax, and use pottery tools for carving and texture.
You’ll work confidently with a blow torch to fuse layers and explore the creative possibilities of alcohol inks, shellac, and dry pigments. Deborah will also demonstrate how to embed photographs, add visual interest through mark making, and embrace happy accidents as part of the artistic process.
Each student will work on two 10-inch square wood panels, which are included along with most other supplies. Please bring a blow torch and any personal images or collage elements you’d like to incorporate. You’ll leave with completed work and a solid foundation in encaustic and mixed media techniques.
