Class Content: We will explore 2 different sanded papers while learning how to layer our soft pastels to create beautiful paintings. Painting on black paper adds instant drama to anything you paint! The other sheet is white and we can use multiple mediums to create an underpainting to support our final product. Images will be landscapes, skies, or florals. Instructor will provide 2 sheets of sanded paper. Instructor will also bring watercolors, fluid acrylic and rubbing alcohol to use for underpaintings. Don’t worry, this is a beginner-friendly class and I will do several demonstrations.

If you have any questions about supplies for this class, please email me. I am happy to talk pastel anytime!
Supply List:
- Students need to provide their own soft pastels (not oil pastels, they are very different!).
- Please bring an inexpensive brush and container to hold water or rubbing alcohol.
- You are welcome to bring extra paper to practice as much as you like.
- You are welcome to bring your own watercolors, gouache, fluid acrylics or acrylic inks to utilize for underpaintings on the white sheet of paper.
Biography: After spending the majority of my time hiking the Smoky Mountains, I began looking for a new hobby. Google led me to the Oak Ridge Art Center where I signed up for a variety of classes. I found soft pastels in 2022 and fell in love with the medium, especially since no brush was required! I continued learning on my own as much as I could and have taken several in-person workshops. I enjoy learning as much as I can about painting in any medium. I now teach a soft pastel painting class at the ORAC and enjoy it very much!
