Workshop Content: Art, like life, gives us plenty of opportunities to learn and to grow. I say, let’s take advantage of them all.
Class Description: In this workshop you will have three days to explore and experiment! No pressure to complete a masterpiece. “What if?”, “Why not?”, and “Let’s do it!” will be our mantra. We will experience the abandonment of mingling, running and splattering paint. We will explore mark making with stamps, stencils, tools found around your home, garage and in nature. We will be creating backgrounds on yupo and watercolor paper.
Supply List: • 2 sheets 20“ x 26” synthetic paper (yupo) medium weight (70lb)
• 1 sheet Arches 22” x 30” – You can use the back of a discarded painting or a sheet that has gotten dirty. Arches holds up to punishment is why I like it.
• 35 ml (1.18 fl. Oz.) fluid acrylic in Primary Cyan, Magenta and Primary Yellow (Hansa yellow Med.) You can use other colors as long as they are in the red, yellow, blue family. We want transparent colors. Golden, Holbein and DaVinci makes these.
• Watercolors in tubes. We squeeze out our paints directly on the yupo. Artist grade paint. Choose 3 colors that you like the neutrals they make, preferably transparent. Sometimes I do use one opaque
• White and black gouache – A 14ml tube should be enough. Artist grade.
• Watercolor painting supplies – brushes, palette, water container, paper towels, apron
• 2” or larger flat brush (A Hake brush is inexpensive and works great); old watercolor brushes to use with fluid acrylic, several plastic grocery bags or white plates to use as palettes, masking tape to hold down bags.
• Search your kitchen, kids toy box and garage for things that can be used to stamp or stencil with. A spiral whisk, a slotted spatula, cork and plastic bullet holders are some of the common one I’ve seen. Don’t forget bubble wrap or corrugated cardboard. Store bought or handmade stamps and stencils and other mark making tools – I have some to share. Don’t purchase unless you just need an excuse to buy some.
• Foam roller – Flat ended not a round end. Can be purchased at most craft stores.
Biography: Instructor Bio: The last 20 plus years have been devoted to exploring water media and its many possibilities. I’ve gone from using only transparent watercolors, to rolling on gouache, from watercolor to fluid acrylic and back to watercolor, and from hating yupo to loving it. As a teacher I am continually learning new things and am inspired with new ideas from my students. That is why I love teaching as much as I love painting. Art, like life, gives us plenty of opportunities to learn and to grow. I say, let’s take them.
