Biography: Christian Freeman is an artist and Knoxville native with a BFA degree from the University of Tennessee. She began her career working with the Symphony Showcase Homes and Parade of Homes, and paints murals and custom finishes. She has completed countless residential and commercial projects, and has the ability to work on any scale, and within nearly any budget. Christian’s work is her passion, and she uses it to transform homes and businesses into aesthetically beautiful and better functioning spaces. One well-known local mural she did was that of the lovely ladies in the windows at Patrick Sullivan’s, which were auctioned off several years back by Knox Heritage. Inspired by Toulouse Lautrec, she created the ladies of the night with fun line, lush color, and enticing energy. Christian is also an accomplished canvas painter and instructor.

Having taught privately, some of her students have gone on to win scholarships and show in galleries on their own. Christian has recently made Lenior City her home and is continuing to create, teach, and consult locally and beyond.

Class Content: Let’s paint together and create a set of matching Cades Cove scenes! You can separate them or hang them as a set. We’ll paint them side by side so the colors and strokes match and they will make a nice set but with different elements.

Whether you are a beginner or advanced painter, you will have fun with this class. PACK A LUNCH as we’ll go till 4 or 4:30!

DON’T WORRY if you don’t draw, I will have outlines and transfer paper so you don’t need to draw, but you can if you want to!

I will demonstrate small sections at a time and then provide personal assistance around the room as you work on that section.

You will learn techniques to make grassy slopes look natural by using specific brushes and strokes. You can change the colors up or move the elements around to make it your own by adding flowers to your field if you like. Ill teach you tricks to make the trees look round and have depth. You won’t believe how simple the grass and structures are to paint with specific brushes I will bring for you!

Once you learn these techniques, you can go home and use them to create art on your own.

This class works for Beginner to Advanced students. The more experienced painters will just have more detail in theirs but everyone will go home with 2 nice pieces.

OPTIONS:

  • If you prefer working in Watercolors or Oil paint, and you can bring your own supplies, you can take the class for $80. I have taught in different media and I can assist with those as well.

Cost $90 per student.

Length of class, 6 hrs.

Deadline: July 10, 2025

Cancellation Policy: Participants may cancel up to 30 days prior to the start of the Workshop. There will be no refunds within 30 days of the workshop. If AGTV or the instructor cancels the workshop, participants will get a full refund. To cancel, fill out the workshop refund request form

Workshop Content: This 2-day workshop will teach you how to paint with soft pastels in a layered manner to create colorful and impressionistic-style paintings. We will use several underpainting techniques to get our creative juices flowing, tone the paper, and give us interesting edges and shapes to work from.

Day 1: Let’s paint pears! We will paint one pear, about 6X8, on any paper you bring, to get a feel for layering. In the afternoon, we will paint the same pear with an alcohol wash underpainting. We will paint a 9X12 landscape using a watercolor underpainting. The sanded papers will eat up a paintbrush so make sure to bring a cheap, old brush if possible.

Day 2: Let’s paint clouds, one of my favorite things to paint! We will use value from our reference photo as a guide to painting colorful clouds. Students can choose to either do a watercolor or alcohol wash underpainting. Don’t be intimidated, all of these techniques are beginner friendly! Feel free to email me with any questions!

Supply List: Instructor will provide 2 9X12 sheets of pastel paper commonly used by instructor (ie, UArt, Pastelmat, Lux Archival, handmade with pastel ground; depending on number of sign-ups), rubbing alcohol, brushes to share, latex gloves, containers for rubbing alcohol to share.

Student will need to bring at least 2 sheets of their own paper. Canson Mi-tientes is a very inexpensive alternative to sanded papers and great for practice! They also need a selection of pastels. I use various brands including NuPastel, Terry Ludwig, Mount Vision, Great American, Sennelier and Blue Earth. If possible, bring some harder and some softer pastels to achieve the layered look. We start with the harder sticks to block in areas and finish with the buttery, soft pastels. Jerry’s carries several harder sticks to choose from: Mungyo is a cheaper alternative. There are also Cretacolor and Rembrandts. They also have sets from Sennelier, which are much softer, for the final layer. Please bring a tabletop easel, backing board to fit your paper and tape so we can work upright; allowing the dust to fall down and out of the way.

I will have some reference photos but feel free to bring your own. We will be painting a pear, a blue sky day with clouds, and a simple landscape of trees with a field of grass. I’m happy to email you the photo I’m using as well. Please bring gloves if possible, a small container to hold rubbing alcohol and an old, cheap brush to liquefy the rubbing alcohol. I will have all these things as well for the class to share. Day two will include a watercolor underpainting so please bring a small selection of watercolors. If you don’t have them, you can continue to use an alcohol underpainting.

Biography: My husband and I moved from Florida to Knoxville in 2017, where I taught third and fourth grade. We enjoyed having the Smoky Mountains in our backyard and the changing seasons.

After becoming a 900 miler, I was looking for a new hobby to try out. Google led me to the Oak Ridge Art Center where I signed up for a ‘Mixed Media’ class, having no clue what that really was! I fell in love with all the art supplies and soon after found soft pastels. I learned as much as I could and watched all the tutorials I could find. Now I teach painting with pastels at the ORAC Tuesday mornings.

I enjoy painting landscapes and florals and dabbling in many other mediums to learn how to enhance my pastel paintings. I enjoy learning myself and continue to take pastel workshops whenever I can.

You are invited to change things up a bit by pairing Zentangle with different pens as well as mixed media techniques and materials to create a lovely composition on a traditional surface as well as a translucent background. We will focus on the Zentangle “embedded letters” technique, but instead of letters, our projects will incorporate the dragonfly as a focal point–it could be stamped, stenciled, embossed or collaged… you choose! A glass-backed frame is included with the class so that light can travel through your translucent piece as it would through the delicate wings of a dragonfly. Color might be incorporated into your creation if you wish, as a subtle hint or a bolder statement.

Supply List: All necessary supplies provided in the cost of the class; participants are welcome to bring their favorite pens and colored pencils/chalk pencils if they wish.

Biography: Amy Broady, M.Ed., is a Certified Zentangle Teacher™ and a Veriditas-trained Labyrinth Facilitator. She began her career as a professional art educator in 1995. She has spent most of her school career teaching at the elementary level, but loves teaching adults just as much as she loves teaching children. She started practicing and teaching the Zentangle Method in 2010 to children in the school setting and adults in various community venues as well as at retreats and conferences; she has provided professional development to countless art educators at the local, state, and national levels. Amy is delighted that Zentangle permeates her personal and professional life, creatively, philosophically, and socially as she has made dear friends through her involvement with Zentangle. In 2022 she established her own tiny little art studio, Pen & Path, for helping others begin or progress on their creative journeys through mixed media adventures in Zentangle, labyrinths, and more. Amy doesn’t sell her artwork and rarely displays it in public venues, but derives great joy and satisfaction from her personal practice as well as teaching others.
