November 17, 2022 – 10:00 AM The Art of Fused Glass

Art Guild of Tellico Village

Reflecting light and the world around us, glass provides a window to the world and inspires reflection in our souls.

Fusing glass offers wonderful possibilities for creating functional pieces, such as plates and bowls, as well as artwork, by using color and form.  This presentation will introduce you to Fused Glass Art. What is it? How is it made? How is fused glass different from Blown Glass and Stained Glass? KC will introduce you to the process and show examples of different styles of art glass.

About the Artist: KC Babb has been working with glass for over 15 years, focusing primarily on Fused Glass. KC started her fused glass journey primarily making plates and bowls, but more recently has been making clocks and a few landscapes.

Supply List: All supplies and equipment will be provided and are included in the class cost.

Biography: With a BA in Interior Design from Kent State University, Marc has enjoyed creative outlets most of his life, whether generating Frank Lloyd Wright inspired designs in paint, as floor treatments, or devising intricate designs for stained glass compositions. The college curriculum while design oriented, was also focused on architecture and fine art, including numerous drawing, visual organization, and construction technology courses, which have all added to the depth of Marc’s design acumen. In the mid-1990’s, Marc fulfilled a longstanding desire to learn Stained Glass techniques. Early on, Marc’s secondary career as a Stained Glass artist took the turn toward utilization of repurposed and reimagined materials and he has never looked back. In fact, many of his commissions feature unusual glass items or materials as their focal point, and it is these reimagined elements that serve as the inspiration for a given piece. He is a firm believer that Stained Glass is a complex hybrid of art and craft, requiring artistic creativity to design a composition and select the appropriate glass colors, patterns, and textures. It then takes the skills of a craftsman to fabricate the designed composition.

In 2013, with the opening of F.L.A.V.O.R. Studio in upstate NY, Marc realized a lifelong dream to have a dedicated art/work space, which not only allowed for an improved studio environment, but also provided a creative atmosphere where Marc could teach Stained Glass Workshops. With his wife, Debbie, Marc, was also responsible for the creation and administration of a county-wide art trail in Steuben County, NY that showcased the amazing art that was being created in that rural county in western NY. Featuring as many as 35 artists during the weekend event each April, attendees could visit each and every studio and artist, to watch live demonstrations, meet the artists in their work environments, and even purchase works to take home. Running for 8 years, the Arts in Bloom Art Trail helped create a community between the local artists and their neighbors and patrons.

Now in Knoxville, Marc and Deb have rebranded their studio from F.L.A.V.O.R. Studio to Master Repurposers to better reflect the inspiration that secondhand materials can bring to their art. His first local exhibit took place in April 2021 at the Fountain City Library, followed up by an exhibit in August at The Emporium with his wife in a joint show. In November, 2021, Marc was not only selected as one of five local artists to demonstrate his process at the United Way ADT Celebration Event, but he was chosen to film a live Stained Glass demonstration for the Discovery+ network for specific broadcast on their youtube channel.

Marc is excited to call Knoxville home, and in his first year as an artist here, he has found great support from both The Maker City and Arts Alliance organizations, and looks forward to creating exciting new collections in the coming year. He encourages you to find him at maker’s markets around the greater Knoxville area and at his home studio in Fountain City.

October 20, 2022 – 10:00 Advance your Art Profits with High Quality Framing and Reproductions

Art Guild of Tellico Village

Lisa Bell & Timberly Guffey at Fuller’s Frame Shop and Print Studio in Athens will be sharing top tips for framing your artwork for the best impact, including when to use a pre-made frame versus a custom frame, how to pick a frame color that works with your art, and the impact of matting.

They also work closely with artists to provide professional fine art reproductions featuring the artist’s own artwork. The process begins with high resolution scanning and expert editing.  High quality archival prints can then be done on a variety of substrates including papers, canvas, metal, and fabrics.  In addition, artwork can be reproduced on notecards, t-shirts, signs, banners, table runners, ornaments, flags, magnets and much more.

Emotion in Your Art – Digging Deep

Sometimes great rendering in art is not enough. You need to make an emotional connection with your viewers.

This presentation will explore how to make that connection, first inside yourself, then adding it to your work so others can explore it with you.

About the Artist: A devoted watercolorist for over 40 years and a great lover of people and portraiture, Kate Aubrey began drawing while sprawled on the living room floor at age six. Since then, she has graduated to easels, studying with such notable artists as Charles Reid, John Salminen, Stephen Quiller, Ted Nuttall, Don Andrews, Jeannie McGuire, and Lian Quan Zhen.

Life has taken her to six states across the USA from Anchorage, Alaska where she picked up her first watercolor brush to the deep, rich artist’s culture of Cape Cod, Massachusetts. While in Alaska, she worked as one of the first women in the oil field at Prudhoe Bay, painting in her spare time. It all shows up in her work.

Arriving in Tennessee’s Knoxville area in 2014 to settle (she fervently hopes) for good, Kate teaches watercolor workshops inside and outside of Tennessee. She is a past Vice President of the Knoxville Watercolor Society, as well as a member of the Arts Alliance of Knoxville, the Art Guild of Tellico Village, and the Oak Ridge Art Center. Farther afield, she is a member of the National Watercolor Society with signature memberships in the Northwest Watercolor Society, the Southern Watercolor Society, the Watercolor Society of Alabama, and the Tennessee Watercolor Society. She is also a Master Artist at the Cape Cod Art Center in Massachusetts.

Her work has earned many awards in multiple national and international exhibitions and has appeared in “Watercolor Artist Magazine”, “American Art Collector Magazine”, Artist’s Magazine’s “The Best of Watercolor” (Splash 21 and Splash 22), and the “American Watercolor Weekly” e-zine.

When she is not teaching, she and her very large standard poodle can be found in her studio concentrating on her figure and floral paintings with a dash of still life or Apples thrown in. Although, truth be told, the poodle prefers bones….

Heart of Gold

Exhibits

Art Guild of Tellico Village

AGTV has the opportunity to display art in the hallways of two POA buildings:  the Wellness Center and the Chota Rec Center.

  • The Wellness Center accommodates two artists with 10–15 pieces of 2D art each.
  • Chota is well suited for individual artists with 1–6 pieces of 2D art.
  • For 3D art, Chota has a lit display case with glass shelves (about 4 ft. W x 4 ft. H x 1 ft. D).

Our volunteers coordinate with interested artists to change the displays quarterly.  We have an online form which allows you to list the items you would like to display, price them (if desired) and submit pictures. It’s a one-step process that both alerts our Exhibit Chair (Kathy Payne) of your interest and serves as your contract with the POA once your artwork is on display.

If you’re interested, please fill out our Artwork Display online form.

If you have any questions, contact Kathy Payne at ReachKPayne@gmail.com.

Peer Art Review

Art Guild of Tellico Village

Are you interested in getting constructive feedback on your artwork?

We have a Peer Art Review group underway which meets to discuss each other’s art, no matter the medium or degree of completion. This is a friendly peer-to-peer experience with lively, supportive discussions. We share tips on design and composition, our techniques and processes, framing, supplies we use, etc. Everyone benefits because we all learn from the process.

The group meets monthly and members are generally expected to bring a piece of art for review each time.  If you are interested, contact Perry at agtv.president@gmail.com
