Class Content: Dragonflies are symbolic of transition and change. You are invited to change things up a bit by pairing Zentangle with different pens as well as mixed media techniques and materials to create a lovely composition on a traditional paper surface as well as a translucent background. We will focus on the Zentangle “embedded letters” technique, but instead of letters, our projects will incorporate the dragonfly as a focal point–it could be stamped, stenciled, embossed or collaged…you choose! A glass-backed frame is included with the class so that light can travel through your translucent piece as it would through the delicate wings of a dragonfly. Color might be incorporated into your creation if you wish, as a subtle hint or a bolder statement.

Supply List: Sakura Pigma Micron pens in Black, Cool Gray, and Light Cool Gray…size 01 (for a fine line) or size 05 (for a medium line). All three should be the same size; which size you choose should be based on your personal preference. If unable to purchase before class, instructor will have sets on hand for purchase at $10 for a set of 3 (black, cool gray, and light cool gray) of the same size in a Zentangle pen pouch.

All other necessary supplies are provided in the cost of the class. Participants are welcome to bring additional favorite pens and colored pencils/chalk pencils if they wish.

Biography: Amy Broady, M.Ed., is a Certified Zentangle Teacher™ and a Veriditas-trained Labyrinth Facilitator. She began her career as a professional art educator in 1995. She has spent most of her school career teaching at the elementary level, but loves teaching adults just as much as she loves teaching children. She started practicing and teaching the Zentangle Method in 2010 to children in the school setting and adults in various community venues as well as at retreats and conferences; she has provided professional development to countless art educators at the local, state, and national levels. Amy is delighted that Zentangle permeates her personal and professional life, creatively, philosophically, and socially as she has made dear friends through her involvement with Zentangle. In 2022 she established her own tiny little art studio, Pen & Path, for helping others begin or progress on their creative journeys through mixed media adventures in Zentangle, labyrinths, and more. Amy doesn’t sell her artwork and rarely displays it in public venues, but derives great joy and satisfaction from her personal practice as well as teaching others.

Class Content: This will be a little Christmas in August! The Nuno felting process is simply wet felting with wool and fabric. We encourage the wool fibers to migrate through the silk fabric. We are going to combine a lovely silk habotai with fine merino wool, and we will create an elegant, vibrant stocking. You will learn how to work with silk habotai, merino wool, and natural sheep’s locks. We will felt over a resist to form the stocking. Students will complete one stocking and will leave with the knowledge of how to create nuno felted items. I will provide all materials you need, but you will bring a few items such as towels. It is a wet felting method, so wear comfortable clothing.

Supply List:

  • 1 old bath towel
  • 3 old dish towels/hand towels
  • 1 small bowl (1 quart)
  • ball brause if you have one
  • sharp scissors: both small and large
  • bring a lunch

Biography: I have been teaching felting classes for two years. I have focused on teaching the wet felting process to create structural shapes and 2D designs. During the last 10 years, I have felted vessels, garments, and sculptures. Finding and using fabrics to incorporate into the felting process is a small obsession of mine. I have been inspired by the art of Fiona Duthie for many years, and I incorporate many of her techniques into my own projects.

Then, have fun using stamps, doilies and more to add decorative patterns in and around the flowers to enhance the overall composition. This is also a great way to add some design interest to the background of any floral paintings that you already have on hand, either finished or in progress.

Demos along with individual help will encourage everyone in their own artistic expression.
