“When I die and they lay me to rest…”
but, in the meantime
4 Careers, 8 Decades
Def: “DE-FY-ING  GRAV-I-TY”
Don’t let fear hijack your art at any age

While the vistas and flora of the park lend themselves to the utter spontaneity and brilliance of color with alcohol ink, pine needle/gourd basketry goes beyond the two-dimensional art form. The baskets become tangible three-dimensional pieces of art using materials that the earth provides that she can wrap her hands around. Some of the material she grows or collects in a sustainable manner on walks. The baskets are inspired by touch, feel and a connection to the forest floor and riverbanks.

While Kathy says she can talk for hours about the process of her art, her talk today will focus on her convoluted journey and finding the inspiration for art at any age.

Artist Bio:

Kathleen creates her art in multiple mediums concentrating on pine needle basketry and alcohol inks. The results are largely inspired by her close connection to the natural environment of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, her love of gardening, and experience with landscape design.

Baskets can be made in many different mediums, often following a pattern. They can become a functional piece of the working household; however, her baskets aren’t meant for muffins! When weaving by wrapping and coiling the Southern Long Leaf Pine Needles together, and attaching them to a gourd, she starts off with a plan or idea. As she is weaving, the basket often (usually) takes on a life of its own, taking her down a path she didn’t see or travel before. It becomes more than a sum of its parts and evolves into an artistic journey for her. She has been self-employed for 39.75 years. (who’s counting…) Her gallery, Gracehill Fine Art and Basketry, and home are in Townsend, TN. Her art and accomplishments are listed on her website www.GracehillArt.com.

The Artist Journey: How did I get here?

This will be a show and tell demonstrations. Cindy will describe her process – along with examples and tell the story of her progression into where she is at now.

Artist Bio:

I’ve been drawn to the medium of clay since I was a little girl. My earliest memory is an elementary school field trip (while living in Japan) to a Japanese potters studio. It was the first time I experienced the wheel, throwing off the hump, as well as gathering raw clay. That experience has led me years later – sitting in front of the potter’s wheel in my own home studio.

I enjoy creating functional pieces utilizing different techniques for surface design. I’m most drawn to the Zentangle process on my pieces, using sgraffito or other surface tools. The non-representational designs as well as organic designs are satisfying to create and then share with others. I can’t imagine life without Zentangle and pottery.

Supply List: Paper: 8 x 10 Arches Cold Press 140 fine grain paper. Bring loose sheets or a block
Paint Tubes: Cobalt Blue, Cerulean Blue, Ultramarine Blue, Raw Sienna, Hansa Yellow or Lemon Yellow, or Indian Yellow, Pyrrol Red or Cadmium Red or Cadmium Red Light, Quinacridone Rose or Alizarin Crimson, Dioxygene Purple, Pthalo Blue (red shade is preferred), Lavender, Indigo or Payne’s Gray or Neutral Tint, Burnt Umber

I recommend M. Graham, Daniel Smith, Winsor Newton, Van Gogh, Sennelier, or equivalent brands. I primarily use M. Graham and Daniel Smith tubes. Avoid Student Grade Materials.
I like to experiment with a range of pigments. Along with the above, I may occasionally use several other pigments in small quantities, including Prussian Blue, Burnt Sienna, and Permanent Blue. The list I have shared above should suffice for this course but feel free to bring any others you may already have.
Brushes
1. Hake (medium sized)
2. Round mop (medium sized)
3. Rigger or liners (thin)
4. 1” flat
5. 2 round brushed with good points – 8 or 10 and 12 or 14
6. Chinese calligraphy brush
7. Fan brush
Numbers vary across different brands as there is little standardization. I recommend avoiding smaller round and mop brushes. Its difficult to create loose, atmospheric paintings with those.

Other items we will need:
1. Gatorboard or acrylic sheet to support the paper. This is a must as some of the paintings will be very wet and a block will not suffice. Please avoid using drawing boards as they wrap with moisture.
2. An old towel to place under the support.
3. Raisers to increase the angle of the paper. Anything stable would work, including boxes and paperweights
4. Rags or wipes.
5. 2 Water containers
6. Clips or artist’s tape to hold paper
7. Kneaded erasers
8. Fine mist spraying bottle
9. 4b pencils
10. Sketchbooks

Workshop Content: Art, like life, gives us plenty of opportunities to learn and to grow. I say, let’s take advantage of them all.

Class Description: In this workshop you will have three days to explore and experiment! No pressure to complete a masterpiece. “What if?”, “Why not?”, and “Let’s do it!” will be our mantra. We will experience the abandonment of mingling, running and splattering paint. We will explore mark making with stamps, stencils, tools found around your home, garage and in nature. We will be creating backgrounds on yupo and watercolor paper.

Supply List: • 2 sheets 20“ x 26” synthetic paper (yupo) medium weight (70lb)
• 1 sheet Arches 22” x 30” – You can use the back of a discarded painting or a sheet that has gotten dirty. Arches holds up to punishment is why I like it.
• 35 ml (1.18 fl. Oz.) fluid acrylic in Primary Cyan, Magenta and Primary Yellow (Hansa yellow Med.) You can use other colors as long as they are in the red, yellow, blue family. We want transparent colors. Golden, Holbein and DaVinci makes these.
• Watercolors in tubes. We squeeze out our paints directly on the yupo. Artist grade paint. Choose 3 colors that you like the neutrals they make, preferably transparent. Sometimes I do use one opaque
• White and black gouache – A 14ml tube should be enough. Artist grade.
• Watercolor painting supplies – brushes, palette, water container, paper towels, apron
• 2” or larger flat brush (A Hake brush is inexpensive and works great); old watercolor brushes to use with fluid acrylic, several plastic grocery bags or white plates to use as palettes, masking tape to hold down bags.
• Search your kitchen, kids toy box and garage for things that can be used to stamp or stencil with. A spiral whisk, a slotted spatula, cork and plastic bullet holders are some of the common one I’ve seen. Don’t forget bubble wrap or corrugated cardboard. Store bought or handmade stamps and stencils and other mark making tools – I have some to share. Don’t purchase unless you just need an excuse to buy some.
• Foam roller – Flat ended not a round end. Can be purchased at most craft stores.

Biography: Instructor Bio: The last 20 plus years have been devoted to exploring water media and its many possibilities. I’ve gone from using only transparent watercolors, to rolling on gouache, from watercolor to fluid acrylic and back to watercolor, and from hating yupo to loving it. As a teacher I am continually learning new things and am inspired with new ideas from my students. That is why I love teaching as much as I love painting. Art, like life, gives us plenty of opportunities to learn and to grow. I say, let’s take them.
