Art Guild of Tellico Village

This is Only the Beginning

A unique part of my work is that it’s grounded in process as much as outcome. I’m constantly figuring things out—learning from mistakes, studying, and trying to improve with each piece. I paint landscapes mainly in oil, but I also work in watercolor, acrylic, mixed media, and resin, using each to explore different qualities like texture, light, and movement.

My style isn’t fixed, it is growing. It shifts as I try new approaches and pay closer attention to what I’m seeing. I think of my development as non-linear, building in different areas at various times rather than along a straight path. That sense of exploration carries into each new piece. What I learn along the way matters just as much as the finished work—I’m driven by those moments of discovery, when something clicks and opens up a new way to improve

My presentation will be a discussion of my journey as an artist, what I am learning along the way, my approach to the creative process, and my hopes for continued growth and improvement in the future.

Artist Bio:

Marguerite Smith Hogan is an evolving artist creating gifted paintings inspired by the surrounding East Tennessee scenery. She works in studio and en plain air in oil, acrylic water color, and mixed media using oils and cold wax. She began selling her artwork once juried into Artsclamation! in 2017. Since then, Marguerite has been juried into additional ArtsClamations! as well as several ArtXtravaganzas art events and the Knoxville Museum of Arts’ Artist on Location plein air event. Marguerite is also a 2021 Bailey Grant recipient. Marguerite has taken in person workshops from Camille Prezwodek, Kathi Odom, and Ann Blair Brown as well as various online studies. As she continues to perfect her style and skill, her goal is to eventually become a full-time artist.

Class Content:  Students will be provided with a prepared gourd that they will decorate with alcohol inks like in example (D). Once dry it will be coated with several coats of UV varnish then a coat of wax. If you wish to draw on your gourd instead, like example (A), she’ll have a few felt tip pens.

After an early lunch, students will start weaving southern long leaf pine needles onto the gourd using the simple or spiral stitch. Students will learn how to start a basket, how to wrap a coil to add color, how to add a bead, and how to add thread when it runs out. Ways to add texture to your basket will be taught as well.

The gourds are prepped ahead of time by the instructor. Prepared gourds have been cut, the guts cleaned out, sanded, holes drilled with proper spacing, wood petrifier added to the inside, formula 49 applied to the outside, and the interior sprayed black. Pine needles will be preconditioned using a turkey roaster and glycerin.

BRING YOUR OWN LUNCH.  Dessert provided. (Email Kathy ahead of time if you are gluten free or have a nut allergy. 865-660-6400 or info@GracehillArt.com)

Supply List: All alcohol inks, varnish, and wax to decorate the gourd are provided, along with prepared Southern Longleaf pine needles, choices of artificial sinew, jewelry twine, or waxed linen and beads. How many beads depend on what you pick out. These are your supplies to make the basket.

IF YOU WISH TO BRING A SMALL DEER ANTLER OR PIECE OF DRIFTWOOD OR OTHER NATURAL WHAT NOT WE’LL SEE IF YOU CAN WEAVE IT ONTO YOUR BASKET. Certainly if you are in love with your own beads bring them.

If you wish to have a gourd with cut outs on the sides like example (B) and (C) Bring an extra $10 with you and contact the instructor ahead of time so she can bring one. If you wish to use some Palm Inflorescence like example (B) and (F) (the squiggly stuff) you can buy that for $1.50 a strand. If you have a piece of driftwood or other wood that you would like to mount a “gourd top” on like example (E) and (F) contact Kathy ahead of time. There is not an extra charge but she needs a photo of your hunk of wood so she can pick out an appropriate gourd top.

She will also provide different-sized sewing needles, clips, and gauges that stay with the instructor. She’ll bring a couple of spare scissors, needle nose and regular pliers and awls with her but if you have them bring them, it will save you some time.  She’ll have an assortment of prepared gourds in different shapes, but mostly round, cut with a wave in the gourd rim rather than straight across. (Adds interest.) The rim you sew on can take many forms. No two baskets are ever the same. You will have plenty of time to finish this basket.  If you want to see examples of what students have created in the past she has a link on the home page of her website with student work.

Hannah Hancock Presents!

In this presentation I will go over my personal journey as an artist. I will go over how my art developed over the years, how I find inspirations, stay motivated, my artistic process, and how/why I choose the materials I use. I will also go over how I’ve applied to art shows and gotten my work into professional settings as a younger artist. As well as a behind the scenes look at what it means to have a solo art show or be sponsored by a gallery. An A-Z run down of my life as an artist outside of being y’all favorite art store employee!

Artist Bio:

I am a professional mixed media artist in Knoxville, TN; born and raised. I am currently working as one of the managers at Jerry’s Artarama. I have a bachelors of arts in Graphic Design from Maryville College. I have participated in a numerous number of regional art exhibitions throughout my life in East Tennessee. As well, I’m teaching at a variety of art and crafts centers throughout the area. My work is an exploration of my southern roots in East Tennessee and the relationships I have cultivated as an adult. Carefully crafted topographies are woven together in quilt like patterns telling the stories of the people I love or have loved. The bright and saturated colors are inspired by the memories, impressions of events both how they did and did not actually appear. These vibrant colors coupled with serious titles evoke a feeling of whimsy and heaviness that we all face as human beings.

“When I die and they lay me to rest…”
but, in the meantime
4 Careers, 8 Decades
Def: “DE-FY-ING  GRAV-I-TY”
Don’t let fear hijack your art at any age

While the vistas and flora of the park lend themselves to the utter spontaneity and brilliance of color with alcohol ink, pine needle/gourd basketry goes beyond the two-dimensional art form. The baskets become tangible three-dimensional pieces of art using materials that the earth provides that she can wrap her hands around. Some of the material she grows or collects in a sustainable manner on walks. The baskets are inspired by touch, feel and a connection to the forest floor and riverbanks.

While Kathy says she can talk for hours about the process of her art, her talk today will focus on her convoluted journey and finding the inspiration for art at any age.

Artist Bio:

Kathleen creates her art in multiple mediums concentrating on pine needle basketry and alcohol inks. The results are largely inspired by her close connection to the natural environment of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, her love of gardening, and experience with landscape design.

Baskets can be made in many different mediums, often following a pattern. They can become a functional piece of the working household; however, her baskets aren’t meant for muffins! When weaving by wrapping and coiling the Southern Long Leaf Pine Needles together, and attaching them to a gourd, she starts off with a plan or idea. As she is weaving, the basket often (usually) takes on a life of its own, taking her down a path she didn’t see or travel before. It becomes more than a sum of its parts and evolves into an artistic journey for her. She has been self-employed for 39.75 years. (who’s counting…) Her gallery, Gracehill Fine Art and Basketry, and home are in Townsend, TN. Her art and accomplishments are listed on her website www.GracehillArt.com.

The Artist Journey: How did I get here?

This will be a show and tell demonstrations. Cindy will describe her process – along with examples and tell the story of her progression into where she is at now.

Artist Bio:

I’ve been drawn to the medium of clay since I was a little girl. My earliest memory is an elementary school field trip (while living in Japan) to a Japanese potters studio. It was the first time I experienced the wheel, throwing off the hump, as well as gathering raw clay. That experience has led me years later – sitting in front of the potter’s wheel in my own home studio.

I enjoy creating functional pieces utilizing different techniques for surface design. I’m most drawn to the Zentangle process on my pieces, using sgraffito or other surface tools. The non-representational designs as well as organic designs are satisfying to create and then share with others. I can’t imagine life without Zentangle and pottery.
