Wildlife Photography – Artistic Photography of Wildlife from around the World

Jan Muir has been creating intimate portraits of wildlife in remote locations. She will share her art, favorite locations, adventure stories, and some simple tips to bring your own photographic vision to life.

Artist Bio: On the Edge of Wild

From the glitter of Las Vegas to the whispers of the Smoky Mountains, my art travels between urban pulse and serene wild song. My experiences touch each artwork and become a testament to the cultural vibrancy and untamed beauty that inspire me. From remote glaciers to bustling foreign festivals, each experience adds a vibrant thread to my artistic tapestry. Through my art, I strive to connect each of us to the majesty of nature and the diversity of culture, to ignite a passion for preserving our planet’s uniqueness and wonder.

Nature is my constant muse. It whispers to me, and I translate its voice into visual stories using photos, glass, ceramics, and paint. Each medium, in different ways, allows me to express the awe, the fragility, the resilience of our planet.
My artwork is always evolving and experimentation is my companion. Molten glass is coaxed into swirling orbs and becomes a frozen echo of sunlit waves crashing on distant shores. Clay, my ancient teacher, whispers stories of mountain ranges weathered by the winds of time, each crack and crevice a testament to resilience and beauty. Pigments, vibrant emissaries from faraway bazaars, remind me of the uniqueness and fragility of our shared humanity. Through these diverse mediums, I strive not only to capture the awe-inspiring grandeur of nature but also to ignite a sense of compassion, a call to protect the wild spaces that sustain us all. Each piece invites you to walk with me, to step beyond the familiar and embrace the exquisite dance of wonder that unfolds around us each and every day.

I invite you to step closer to both listen to the whispers of nature, and to see the vibrant cultural threads that weave us all together. Welcome to my journey. Please walk with me.

Workshop Content: Want to have some fun? Try something new? Yupo has some surprises for you. Did you know you can weave it; burn holes in it; fold it; paint on it; collage on it; write on it; stamp it; draw on it and apply any of these techniques in combination. Join this workshop and we’ll experiment and have fun. We’ll try several media and techniques and combine techniques. I’ll demonstrate, you’ll try your hand at it and we will critique the results at the end of each day. We will learn by doing and observing what others create.

Day One: We will go over the unique qualities of Yupo and how these qualities make wonderful and innovative paintings possible. I will demonstrate painting with watercolor, acrylic and alcohol paints and inks and you will try them for yourself. I’ll demonstrate using different media in combination as well as adding collage, explaining the order of layering the different media to achieve the best results. Then you will try a couple of paintings yourself using both ink and paint. You will then create two or more multimedia paintings using layering techniques. I will explain critique approaches, and we will critique everyone’s art as a group.

Day Two: I’ll demonstrate a folded painting, weaving with Yupo to create a painting, and how to burn holes in Yupo to create a 3-D painting. I’ll demonstrate the steps for weaving and for burning holes in Yupo. We’ll all prepare at least two paintings to weave and burn beginning today and continuing on Day 3. We’ll critique today’s paintings considering which might work well for weaving or burning.

Day Three: You can finish your paintings from Day Two and/or create new ones. I’ll review each of your paintings individually and discuss which are the best candidates for the weaving and burning techniques. Then you can try these techniques yourself with your paintings. We’ll critique paintings and go through what we have learned, what surprised us and what inspired us.

While focusing on the present moment, the effects of Light, on our subject, we will use short visible marks and brushstrokes to create beautiful impressionistic pieces of art. Throughout the duration of this workshop, I will assist students individually to create The best composition from their viewpoint, while teaching how to layer color to record light, movement, and the present.

Biography: Christian Freeman is an artist and Knoxville native with a BFA degree from the University of Tennessee. Having begun her career working with The Symphony Showcase Homes and Parade of Homes, she paints murals and custom finishes. She has completed countless residential and commercial projects, and has the ability to work on any scale, and within nearly any budget. Christian’s work is her passion, and she uses it to transform homes and businesses into aesthetically beautiful and better functioning spaces. One well known local mural she did was that of the lovely ladies in the windows at Patrick Sullivan’s, which were auctioned off several years back by Knox Heritage. Inspired by Toulouse Lautrec, she created the ladies of the night with fun line, lush color, and enticing energy. Christian is also an accomplished canvas painter and art instructor. Having taught privately, some of her students have gone on to win scholarships and show in galleries on their own. Christian has recently made Lenior City, Tennessee her home and is continuing to create, teach, and consult locally and beyond.

Class Content: Collage is such a fun and versatile medium—the creative possibilities are endless! Artists of all skill levels are encouraged to try your hand at gelli plate printing with acrylic paints, using the results to assemble your own collages. You’ll start by learning the basics of how to make mono-prints with a gelli plate, and how to use the results (along with other collage material) to create your own unique mixed media artwork. Along the way, you’ll learn the basics of gelli plate mono-printing, color mixing, and collage techniques, as well as how to use your prints, drawing/painting, and other collage materials to bring it all together in your final pieces. Let’s have some fun!

Supply List: All materials will be provided, including a variety of collage papers. You will have the use of a gelli plate during the workshop (along with all the accessories and paper you need to make prints), acrylic paints, acrylic mediums for adhering collage to the surfaces, substrates for your final pieces (e.g., canvas or board), paint brushes, etc.

You are encouraged to bring along any additional collage material that appeals to you personally. This can be any type of paper (magazine papers, painted papers, tissue papers, text or images from old books, cut-outs, maps, etc., etc.). The more material you have, the more choices you will have when it comes time to assemble your final pieces. I suggest you also bring along an apron or something to protect your clothing. Acrylic is unforgiving if you get it on your clothes!

Biography: I come from a Chemistry and Geology background, but have always had a keen interest in art, and have taken a variety of workshops and classes in different media over the years. In 2015, I was able to take the plunge into art full-time, studying for two years with the Open College of the Arts (based in the UK) before being juried in as a member of the Art Market Gallery in Knoxville in late 2017. My work has been accepted into a number of juried exhibitions in the Knoxville area, including the Arts & Culture Alliance National Juried Exhibition (2020, 2023), Arts in the Airport at McGhee Tyson Airport (2020, 2021, 2023, 2024), The District Gallery’s “The Big Tiny Show” Exhibition (2022, 2023, 2024), and the Arts & Culture Alliance’s “No Bigger than a Breadbox” Exhibition (2021, 2023, 2024). I have also exhibited works locally in Knoxville at the Marble Alley Lofts, the Emporium Gallery, the Mayor’s offices, and Post-Modern Spirits, and became a juried member of the Foothills Craft Guild in 2023.
