Class Content: Have you ever wanted to learn how to draw something that gives the illusion of three-dimensional on a two-dimensional surface? or do you want to improve on what you already know? Do your paintings or drawings look “flat” or uninviting? This will be a Beginner and Intermediate level drawing class to teach how to draw with form and depth.
We will cover important fundamental drawing skills, tools and techniques such as value, Contrast, and tone to develop a drawing that will bring your drawing from 2 Dimensional (flat) to 3 Dimensional (a form). We will also be learning how to use drawing tools such as: H, HB, B and Ebony pencils and different types of erasers. Drawing strokes, proper drawing paper, blending, and transferring images will also be covered during this class.

Step by Step instruction will guide you to learn what I consider one of the most fundamental elements in drawing and improve what you already know. We will have ample time to practice these skills in order to gain understanding of the techniques before class ends.

Biography: Glenda Bowles has over 30 year of experience in the Arts and nearly this in the medium of watercolor. She has a Bachelors of Fine Arts from the University of Tennessee Knoxville with a concentration in watercolor. She furthered her education at the University of Tennessee with a Masters in Curriculum and Instruction and then went on to receive a Certificate in Counseling in Saint Louis Missouri. She has taught over 25 years to affluent and impoverished students, over a range of ages – from 4 years old to adults. She has taught core art skills, art history and art theory, as well as many other mediums. She has taught in classroom settings in the states as well as overseas. She has also taught art in an Art Therapy setting. She enjoys just about every medium of Art that is out there. Presently, she is creating art in watercolor, oils and graphite predominantly. She has exhibited her artwork in numerous settings from Fine Arts shows and sales including the Brentwood Academy show in Nashville, Memphis College of Art, and in smaller settings in Knoxville and Morristown. She has created murals here in Knoxville as well as in Greece, Belize and Jordan. She has lived in Nashville, Knoxville, St.Louis, Memphis and the country of Jordan. She loves the complexity of this world and seeks to create this in her own artwork by reimagining the beauty around her. She hopes to reflect this beauty of her surroundings into her art for her viewer to experience and enjoy.

Class Content: This is a fun, information-packed, hands-on class to introduce the basic techniques of scratchboarding. Participants will learn about various tools, surfaces and techniques for creating art on black scratchboards. Judy will fast-track the learning curve, guiding students to completing several small works of art. Valuable resources will be provided, helping students advance and quickly gain the skills and confidence to create their own scratchboard paintings.

Supply List: All tools and art materials are provided. Included in the Class Fee are various sizes of black scratchboarding papers and Scratchboard panels, practice sheets, reference photos and patterns, transfer paper, and numerous other useful accessories. Judy will provide every student with a Tool Packet of her favorite scratchboarding tools and supplies to use during the duration of the class session, with an option to purchase the set of tools for $25 or return it to Judy at the end. Several methods of adding color to and sealing the surface of the scratchboards will also be explored, and these materials will also be provided for students to use in class.

Biography: Judy is an award winning artist in scratchboards, watercolors and acrylic paintings. She earned a B.A. in Creative Arts summa cum laude, and taught art to Grades K-12. She has worked as a commercial artist for over 40 years, moonlighting as a fine artist. Judy became intrigued with scratchboarding in the ‘90s. She discovered it to be an excellent surface for capturing the dramatic lighting, textures and details which have become hallmarks in her realistic artwork.

Judy is an Ampersand Art Ambassador, hand-picked to represent the company which manufactures the scratchboard panels she uses. She is an active member of the International Society of Scratchboard Artists (ISSA) and her work has been featured in several of their annual juried and online exhibitions, with several receiving awards. Class Content: We will create works of art from mementos, jewelry and baubles that you have on hand. In this workshop we will be using acrylic paint, art supplies and found materials to fabricate one of a kind mixed media creations. Participants should collect materials such as vintage jewelry, broken jewelry, small baubles and larger pendants or pins work well. We will work together in class to formulate a theme for the piece then build a background from paint, collage or photos creating a medley of items that build a patchwork as a background to the image you want to portray with your baubles, bangles and jewels.

Supply List: Substrate: this is the base and background for your artwork. It can be any of the following: wood panel, deep cradle board, shadow box, wooden box a flat surface that can be painted or collaged and then glue down the jewelry to create your piece.

Found materials: Vintage jewelry to attach to the substrate, postage stamps, book illustrations, handles, drawer pulls and feet, filigree objects, buttons, old postcards, lace, ribbon, decorative tacks, wire, fibers, small statues etc.
Vintage Jewelry of multiple sizes and shapes – Pins and clip on earrings are great for adding impact and color. Bracelets and necklaces make great fill in pieces for accent.
Baubles or pieces of memorabilia that can be used for fill in or background

Bring more than you think you will need – these pieces use a lot of material. I will have some fill in beads, rhinestones and broken pieces to share and I will be gathering donations of vintage or broken jewelry before the class.

Acrylic paint for painting your base – the Art Guild has some acrylic paint in the Art Closet if needed.

Mediums: heavy acrylic gel, gloss medium, workable fixative spray, Gesso, Matte medium – I will have workable fixative spray some of these things to borrow if needed.

Papers to adhere to your substrate (wood surface) as a background: rice paper, vintage papers, art papers, tissue paper, recyclable paintings or drawings on paper, old photographs, Ink jet prints of old photographs, Painted Magazine pages, Craft packets from the Dollar Tree store has some great papers that work well. Drawing materials: paint pens, markers, pencils, ebony pencils as needed

Biography: Mari Kukral is an emerging artist with a heart for nostalgia and building meaningful and memorable art pieces. After her mother passed away and left her over 1500 pieces of costume jewelry, Mari decided to create memorable pieces of art. These have been given to family members, and friends to keep her Mom’s love of baubles and bangles alive. Mari is passionate about learning new techniques to do beautiful art, but also preserving moments by freezing them in time in her works. Her favorite pieces are artistic expressions using mixed media, acrylics, collage, alcohol ink and assemblage.

Class Content: Have you ever wanted to attempt a design in mixed media but didn’t know where to start? Here is an opportunity to join artist and instructor Twyla Marti, in an introduction to mixed media design and assembly.
In visual arts, mixed media is described as artwork in which more than one medium or material has been employed. Materials used to create mixed media art include, but are not limited to, paint, cloth, paper, wood and found objects. Each student will create nine, 1” mini tiles which they will mount on a wood 5” x 5” base. Each tile can be decorated with papers, old pages, candy wrappers, fabric, old ticket stubs, found objects etc. Each student will need to provide his or her own found objects. Examples of found objects: Old buttons, broken jewelry pieces, old badges or pins, old stamps, and/or game pieces. Class Fee includes 5×5 wood base, 9 (nine) wood tiles, assorted cut papers, all paints, and adhesives.

Biography: Twyla Marti has been working in Mixed Media and Fiber Art for over 40 years. She has had the privilege of studying with many of the top artists/instructors in these fields which has helped her develop her own style. She is an avid hiker and finds her inspiration through nature, traveling, visiting art centers and galleries along with studying and exchanging ideas with other artists. Twyla is now teaching at the Plateau Creative Arts Center in Crossville, TN which her and her husband became members of when they moved to Tennessee.

Class Content: In this one-day class, Lil will cover an array of techniques to provide basics and exciting possibilities for painting watercolor on Yupo, a durable, silky plastic paper. With yupo you can use resist, scrape, or lift back to white for highlights. Watercolor flows and mixes freely on Yupo; it’s a wonderful substrate. Topics covered will include how to prepare yupo for the best results, multiple ways to apply the paint, exciting ways to manipulate the paint, and how to frame and protect your painting. There will be a brief presentation, demonstrations and you will be able to paint 2 or 3 paintings trying the techniques. There will be time for Q&A and critique.

Biography: Lil Clinard is known for her large paintings on yupo. She has won numerous awards for her paintings. You may have seen her yupo  watercolor paintings in the AGTV Spring Shows. She paints in both a realistic and abstract style and uses both intense and soft hues. She applies paint wet into wet, rewetting to activate dry paint and to lift, wet into dry and dry onto dry. Lil’s paintings are in private and commercial collections across the US. She has been painting watercolor on yupo for the last 10 years and has learned a lot through trial and error. You have an opportunity to benefit from her experiences.

Class Content: You will learn the fundamentals of how we turn wool roving into felt. You will learn how to lay out wool, apply design elements, and apply water and agitation to create a felted piece of 2D art. This is sometimes called “painting with wool.” During the session, we will discuss types of wool fibers and plant fibers that we can use during the wet felting process. You will create one 2D piece during this session. We will be standing for most of the process, but it is possible to sit also. Wear comfy shoes and clothes. Wet felting is a fun process that almost always delivers unexpected results!

I will introduce these concepts and will supply you with written handouts:
1. what is wool roving?
2. ways to lay out wool roving to prepare for making felt.
3. different types of wool for different applications.
4. how to recognize when your wool is “felted” and “fulled”.
5. how to use fibers like bamboo, silk, and viscose to embellish wool.
6. ways to account for shrinkage of your wool piece for your artistic purposes.

I will bring all the wool, fibers, and silks you will need.
I will also supply bubble wrap, soap, and pool noodles for your use.

We will take a short break for lunch.

Supply List: Students should bring:

1. bath towel (not plush. thin and old is best)
2. one bowl (about 2 quarts)
3. one ball brause or spray bottle
4. 4 old dish towels
5. sharp scissors (for cutting fabric)

Biography: I have been needle felting and wet felting for 7 years, creating 3D sculptures as well as 2D pieces. I was a high school English teacher for 25 years, and I often organized after school programs to teach felting to students. I present the best techniques I have learned from felting teachers, and I hope to share my love of wool fiber art with anyone who is curious!

Workshop Content: Learn to use various mixed media combinations to build surfaces with depth and interest. With an emphasis on water soluble paints and mediums, we will be mixing it up by exploring how everything from gesso, acrylics, inks, mark making tools, and collage may be used to capture the imagination. You will be encouraged to take risks and work beyond your traditional practice in pursuit of your own personal language. These techniques may be applied to a variety of subject matters, styles, and surfaces to create your own unique artistic statement. Jean will focus on still life, abstract, and landscape subjects with an emphasis on design and personal style. Classwork will be part of the course.

Biography: Jean is the author of “Expressive Portraits: Creative Methods for Painting People”. She has been painting for over twenty years, balancing her strong teaching abilities, and writing with her continuing aspiration to convey her ideas in visual form.

Jean’s traditional practice includes referential imagery of people, still life, landscape, and abstraction. The layering of a variety of media offers Jean an assortment of possibilities within her work; quality of edge, line and texture all play a role within her imagery. Although Pederson is well known for her mastery of watercolors, mixed media has become an important venue for her creative expression.

Jean has work placed in the Royal Collection in Winsor England and has been honored with numerous National and International awards over the years. In 2005, Jean was the first recipient of the Federation of Canadian Artists Early Achievement Award. Jean Pederson has exhibited her work Internationally in China, London England, Stockholm Sweden, New York -United Nations, San Francisco, Mexico and across Canada.

Class Content: My goal is to give the participants a basic understanding of china painting. It will be a hands on experience and each participant should leave with one or two pieces of painted china.

Supply List: All supplies will be provided. Each student will get a kit with china, brushes, wipeout tools, oils etc. You might want to bring an apron.

Biography: Art has been a part of my life since childhood and I’ve worked with oils, acrylics, water colors, collage etc., over the years. While in college I took several elective art classes as part of my curriculum for teaching. But when I discovered china painting in 1996, I was hooked and it became my passion. I have studied with many of the top painters in this art field over the years and have been featured in China Decorator magazine on 3 different occasions and hope to be featured in the upcoming IPAT magazine in October. I have received many blue ribbons over the years and a Best of the Show award. My work has traveled as far as Novgorod, Russia.

Class Content: This workshop will give you an introduction to glass cutting and mosaic building. We will be using stained glass pieces as well as vitreous glass tiles. Students will make a 12” square stained glass covered stepping stone that can be for use in the garden or as a side table/plant stand with the right base. All materials and tools are provided except for the stand shown in the photo.

Supply List: An apron. All glass supplies and tools are provided, if you have a glass cutter you would like to bring and use, please do so.

Biography: Susan Watson picked up a glass cutter at a hobby course in 1983 and has hardly put it down since that time! Her hobbyist days ended in 1984 when she was selected to be the Stained Glass Master craftsman at Dollywood. Over the ensuing years she has created traditional stained glass pieces, studied glass and mosaics from artists all over the world, and done community mosaic projects in villages in Belize, Africa, France and Mexico.

Class Content: Combine acrylic paint, mixed media and collage to create a fun and colorful landscape painting. Use acrylics to start your painting in a very loose way and then create depth with more layers using brushes, sponges, stamps, stencils and collage papers. Add detail and definition to your landscape with oil pastels, colored pencils, Posca pens, inks and more. We will work on a second landscape in the afternoon using a new color scheme. Demonstrations along with individual instruction will encourage everyone to explore their own artistic expression.

Biography: Martha Kisling has over thirty years’ experience painting in the exciting and spontaneous medium of watercolor. She also enjoys experimenting with acrylics, mixed media, collage and batik. She has taught painting classes and workshops while living in Colorado, South Carolina and now Tennessee and enjoys sharing her personal creative discoveries while encouraging students to develop their own artistic expression. Her original artwork has been exhibited in art shows and galleries.
