241101 Stained Glass (for beginners & returning students) with Greg Downs

Art Guild of Tellico Village

If you ever want to try stained glass, now’s your chance.   This is a fun relaxed class and you’ll make some cool stuff for your home or as gifts.  So, invite a friend to join you. 

NEXT CLASS:   November 1st, 4th,6th and 8th

                        Two sessions each day– 9am-noon or 1pm-4pm

                        Held at my studio at 309 Inagehi Lane, Loudon (Mialaquo)   

COST:  $200 for 12 hours of instruction and includes all supplies and glass

241119 Palette Painting with Christian Freeman

Class Content: Palette knife painting is about layering paint.  We will start by painting our canvas a base color and then using a palette knife to add many layers of paint as we create the final piece. We will be painting from a photograph of your choice so please bring several that you want to work from. You may wish to work on 2 pieces simultaneously so one can dry while you are working on the other one. 

Supply List: Bring a photograph of your choice. We will be painting from a photograph. Bring one or two canvases of the size of your choice, acrylic paints and palette knives. I have palette knives that you are welcome to borrow if you do not have any of your own. A water container and brush to do your base painting before you start using the palette knife.                                                

Biography: Christian Freeman is an artist and Knoxville native with a BFA degree from the University of Tennessee. Having begun her career working with The Symphony Showcase Homes and Parade of Homes, she paints murals and custom finishes. She has completed countless residential and commercial projects, and has the ability to work on any scale, and within nearly any budget. Christian’s work is her passion, and she uses it to transform homes and businesses into aesthetically beautiful and better functioning spaces. One well-known local mural she did was that of the lovely ladies in the windows at Patrick Sullivan’s, which were auctioned off several years back by Knox Heritage. Inspired by Toulouse Lautrec, she created the ladies of the night with fun line, lush color, and enticing energy. Christian is also an accomplished canvas painter and art instructor. Having taught privately, some of her students have gone on to win scholarships and show in galleries on their own. Christian has recently made Lenior City, Tennessee her home and is continuing to create, teach, and consult locally and Beyond.

Class Content: This next-level mosaic class will introduce students to creating and working on a 4”x6” undulating substrate. Come experience the Magic of Mosaics and let your imagination soar. Substrates will be prepared ahead of time and a demonstration will teach students how to make them. Then the fun begins while you get creative— Persian rug? Indian blanket? Modern design? Bring your idea and we will make it fly!

Supply List: Tools, substrates and some mosaic materials are provided. Students should bring mosaic parts— particularly bead strings, fringe or tassels in the color palettes they prefer to insure you can make their idea a reality.

Biography: Susan Watson is a traditional stained glass artist who started her mosaic journey 12 years ago after taking a stone cutting class in Pennsylvania. Since then she has studied under mosaic masters all over the world. Earlier this year, Susan studied two different techniques for creating undulating substrates and now it’s time to share this with Knoxville artists.

Class Content: Color pencils offer so much when creating art! Join us for a creative morning where we
delve into the versatile world of colored pencils! We will be exploring the properties of colored
pencils to create depth, control, and brilliance in our artwork. You’ll learn various techniques
of blending, layering, and creating highlights, as well as various methods to enhance your
drawings.

This class is designed for everyone, from beginners to advanced artists. Whether
you’re new to this medium or looking to have fun while learning new techniques, we will find
this class enriching and fun. After learning these skills, we will apply what we have learned to
create a fall scene to bring home and enjoy throughout the season.

Biography: Glenda Bowles has over 30 years of experience in the Arts and nearly this in teaching. She earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Tennessee Knoxville specializing in watercolor. She furthered her education at the University of Tennessee with a Master’s in Curriculum and Instruction and then went on to receive a Certificate in Counseling in Saint Louis Missouri. She has taught for 25 over years to affluent and impoverished students, over a range of ages – from 4 years old to adults, including art therapy. With her extensive experience teaching domestically and abroad, she brings a wealth of knowledge and perspective to any classroom. She focuses on core technical skill building, art history, and art theory, as well as instructing in multiple art mediums in the classroom. She enjoys just about every medium of Art that is out there. Presently, she is creating art in watercolor, pen and ink, oils, acrylic, gouache, colored pencil and graphite predominantly.
She has exhibited her artwork in numerous settings from Fine Arts shows and sales including the Brentwood Academy show in Nashville, Memphis College of Art, the Knoxville Museum of Art, the Emporium, and in smaller settings in Knoxville and Morristown. Presently she shows her work at Studio 106 at the Emporium and Sunago Coffee Shop in Knoxville as well as a permanent exhibit of murals in Knoxville as well as in Greece, Belize, and Jordan. 
 She has lived cross-culturally, which has brought such a deeper love for this world.

Class Content: We will be creating a non objective piece using geometric and free form shapes. Our piece will be formed by drawing our lines touching, shapes overlapping, and running off the page. Once our composition is created we will explore acrylics, oil pastel, and paint pens and markers to complete our work. I suggest a small canvas board in order to have enough time to complete.

Supply List: Small canvas board, acrylic paints and brushes. If you have oil pastels bring them. If not I will bring mine. Bring any markers and paint pens you may have or want to get. I do have some I will bring to share. May want to bring a palette and cup for water and a pencil.

Class Content: This is a beginner friendly class for the art of wet felting with wool fibers. We will make one tree during our time together, and I will send you home with a kit and instructions so you can make a second tree at your leisure. During class, I’ll cover the skills of laying out wool fibers, agitating the fibers to turn into felt, and shaping the felt. I supply the tools and wool you need, but there are a few items you will bring to class. See the list of supplies.

1. one old bath towel, thinner is better
2. three old hand towels
3. one small bowl (1 or 2 quart size)
4. one Brause if you have it (for squirting water)

Biography: Lori has been teaching felting for 2 years, and she has been dry felting and wet felting for 8 years. She is exploring the art of felt to make sculptures, vessels, bags, and wall art. Her needle felted pumpkins can be found on Etsy during the Fall.

Class Content: Have fun painting colorful grapes, leaves and vines using basic watercolor techniques along with wet on wet, negative painting and stamping. Learn how to use wax paper, cheese cloth and real leaves to create texture for an interesting and colorful composition. Different design elements and color schemes can be explored to complete one or two paintings. Demos along with individual help will encourage everyone in their own artistic expression.

Biography: Martha Kisling has over thirty years experience painting in the exciting and spontaneous medium of watercolor. She also enjoys experimenting with acrylics, mixed media, collage and batik. She has taught painting classes and workshops while living in Colorado, South Carolina and now Tennessee and enjoys sharing her personal creative discoveries while encouraging students to develop their own artistic expression. Her original artwork has been exhibited in art shows and galleries and is currently being shown at the Rugby Art Gallery in Historic Rugby, TN.

241015 Handmade Four-hole Stab-stitch Journal with Lyndee Henderson

Class Content: Class Content: This is your chance to enter the world of book binding. Each student will create two 4.5” tall by 6” wide journals using the ancient four-hole stab-stitch binding technique which originated in Japan hundreds of years ago. The first journal will feature front and back covers of high quality scrapbook paper and the second will have handsome handmade paper covers and include a traditional stick decoration. Twenty-five sheets (50 pages) of good quality drawing or buttery sulfate writing paper will be provided for each as well as waxed linen thread and suitable needle. The price also includes a nice quality book binding awl and bamboo bone folder. All you bring are scissors, ruler, pencil, thimble(s), needle-nose pliers (optional) and an old text book, phone book or thick magazine that you don’t care about to be used as backing for punching holes.

During class, you will tear the pages, punch the holes and sew the adorable journal, although no sewing experience is required. Best of all, you’ll leave, not only with books that you made, but with a template, tools, instructions and resource list that will allow you to create more journals at home. These versatile books fit nicely in a purse or bag and the inside paper choices can be modified to use watercolor paper, graph or even regular copy paper. The addition of black cardstock turns it into a cute photo/brag book and mixed media paper will create a ‘must take-along’ book for artists. Great for journaling, poetry, painting, drawing and photographs, they’ll be perfect gifts for family and friends this holiday season.

Class Content: Collage is such a fun and versatile medium—the creative possibilities are endless! In this class you will construct your own unique mixed media pieces in two steps. First, you’ll create an abstract collage, using a variety of papers, pencils, and acrylic paint. This will get the creative juices flowing by requiring you to think about color, shape, texture, composition and mark-making. Next, you’ll learn how to transfer black & white images over the surface of your collages, using acrylic as the transfer medium. This step will transform your collage pieces into something truly personal and special. Come along and have some fun!

Biography: I come from a Chemistry and Geology background, but have always had a keen interest in art, and have taken a variety of workshops and classes in different media over the years. In 2015, I was able to take the plunge into art full-time, studying for two years with the Open College of the Arts (based in the UK) before being juried in as a member of the Art Market Gallery in Knoxville in late 2017. My work has been accepted into a number of juried exhibitions in the Knoxville area, including the Arts & Culture Alliance National Juried Exhibition (2020, 2023), Arts in the Airport at McGhee Tyson Airport (2020, 2021, 2023), The District Gallery’s “The Big Tiny Show” Exhibition (2022, 2023), the Arts & Culture Alliance’s “No Bigger than a Breadbox” Exhibition (2021, 2023), and the Tennessee Valley Universalist Unitarian Church (TVUUC) Gallery (2024). I have also exhibited works locally in Knoxville at the Marble Alley Lofts, the Emporium Gallery, the Mayor’s offices, and Post Modern Spirits, and became a juried member of the Foothills Craft Guild in 2023.

Class Content: This 4-week class will show you how to consistently create photos you will be proud to share with others. For those new to photography, we will show you step by step how to master the basics of digital photography. For experienced photographers …especially self-taught photographers … we will help you fill in the gaps of your photography knowledge and help you acquire more advanced skills. This is a hands-on learning experience with weekly practice assignments and 1 on 1 feedback about your work.

Biography: Jack Retterer is a local Fine Art Photographer with over 50 years of photography experience.  He has taught photography at Benedictine University in Naperville, Illinois. He currently teaches Fine Art Photography at the University of Tennessee.  He is a juried member of the The Art Market Gallery in Knoxville.  He is also very active in the East Tennessee art and photography community thru board positions and memberships in the Professional Photographers of East Tennessee, The Foothills Craft Guild, The Professional Photographers of America, the Knoxville Culture and Arts Alliance, AGTV and the Fairfield Glade Art Guild.
