Class Content: Image transfers can add layers and dimension to your mixed media projects, making them more exciting, interesting and personal. In this class, we will learn a few different techniques for transferring a variety of images onto mixed media surfaces. We’ll start by preparing the mixed media backgrounds, then transfer images using direct, gelli plate, and solvent transfer methods. Each of these techniques will produce different results, which will add to the creative choices that you have for your mixed media designs.
Supply List: All supplies are provided. You may want to bring your own laser printed or photocopied (i.e., toner based, NOT inkjet) images in various sizes to use for transfers. High contrast images will work best — black & white or color can be used. I will also bring a selection in case anyone forgets.
We will make basic background mixed media surfaces to use and practice on, but if you have anything pre-prepared that you would like to use, bring those along, too.
Please bring your own apron. We will be working with acrylics, which are unforgiving if they get on your clothing.
Biography: I come from a Chemistry and Geology background, but have always had a keen interest in art, and have taken a variety of workshops and classes in different media over the years. In 2015, I was able to take the plunge into art full-time, studying for two years with the Open College of the Arts (based in the UK) before being juried in as a member of the Art Market Gallery in Knoxville in late 2017. My work has been accepted into a number of juried exhibitions in the Knoxville area, including the Arts & Culture Alliance National Juried Exhibition (2020, 2023), Arts in the Airport at McGhee Tyson Airport (2020, 2021, 2023, 2024), The District Gallery’s “The Big Tiny Show” Exhibition (2022, 2023, 2024), and the Arts & Culture Alliance’s “No Bigger than a Breadbox” Exhibition (2021, 2023, 2024). I have also exhibited works locally in Knoxville at the Marble Alley Lofts, the Emporium Gallery, the Mayor’s offices, and Post Modern Spirits, and became a juried member of the Foothills Craft Guild in 2023.

Class Content: Have fun and learn how to loosen up your landscape paintings using watercolor techniques on gesso coated paper. The white acrylic gesso creates a slick surface which allows for a loose, painterly effect and lets the colors stay bright and true. We will explore using different materials to apply the watercolor and how the paint can be easily lifted off to create bold, white shapes. Because painting on a gessoed surface allows for faster results we should be able to complete 3 or 4 different landscapes.
Demos along with individual help will encourage everyone in their own artistic expression. Beginners as well as experienced artists are welcome.

Class Content: It’s almost Spring Time!
The flowers are blooming!
Let’s DRAW them – with pencil!
Let’s COLOR them – with paint!
Have you ever just wanted to sit in front of a flower and draw it? Moreover, have you ever wanted to bring it to life and paint the flower sitting in front of you? If so, this is the class for you.
We will be learning how to do just that. During our time together we will learn the techniques behind how to draw flowers from sight.
A painting always needs a good skilled underdrawing of our subject if we are concentrating on achieving a likeness of our subject. We will first develop a solid understanding and practice learning to draw flowers with pencil. Considering their shape, movement, proportion, details and values.
Then we will take these drawings and bring them to life with color. With technical and technique instructions we will bring them from graphite to colored drawings in “no time.” You may choose to follow along with watercolor, acrylics, watercolor pencils, or color pencils. I will take you along the same journey to create botanical drawings in any of these mediums.
Our focus will be on these two paintings to grasp the concept of botanical drawings. After the class you should be ready to jump into spring, painting all the flowers around you. How much fun will your spring be?
