Scratchboard “Wolf” Step-By-Step


Art guild member Judy Lavoie will present the unique art medium of scratchboarding. While showing the process from start-to-finish, Judy will share basic techniques, simple tools, and oodles of tips she has learned during her years of creating scratchboard art.
Judy will teach how create a Wolf on scratchboard and share examples of her own work. Learn about the unusual characteristics of this medium and how you can use it for your own artwork. Artist Bio:
Judy Lavoie has been creating art for as long as she can remember. As a watercolor painter since 1980, she has earned signature member status in several watercolor societies, received numerous top awards for her art, been featured in “Splash” and other art magazines, and has had her artwork juried into countless shows. Several years ago, Judy’s scratchboard artwork earned her membership into the International Society of Scratchboard Artists, and she has won major awards for her scratchboards in their prestigious exhibitions. Judy is also an Ampersand Ambassador, representing the Texas company which manufactures her favorite scratchboard panels and accessories. She is a natural teacher and enjoys sharing her art knowledge, experience and passion for art to help inspire others.
Now’s your chance to explore making stained glass in this 12-hour class spread over 4 days. You’ll learn to cut glass, assemble the pieces and solder the seams to make cool suncatchers and small panels. The class dates are March 19,21,26 & 28 and are held in my studio in Tellico Village. Sign up for either the morning (9-noon) session or the afternoon (1-4) session. The cost is $220, which INCLUDES all the glass and supplies. Class Content: This 7-week class, meeting on Tuesday afternoons, will cover basic information: color theory, paint mixing, brush control, methods of application/technique; production of small sample paintings to illustrate lessons. Demonstrations and individualized instructions will be given in a small class setting in my home.

Biography: Lee has been teaching art classes through Tellico Art Guild for many years, prior to which she taught in public schools in several states for 30 years. She holds degrees from Moore College of Art/Design (4-year scholarship), and Tyler School of Fine Arts, Temple University, both in Philadelphia, PA. Lee is the recipient of numerous awards for painting and printmaking. Locally, her awards have resulted from exhibits with Fountain City Art Center, The Oak Ridge Open Exhibit, TN Art Assn (past member), and TN Watercolor Society, as well as regionally in the Southern Watercolor Society. She holds Signature membership in the last two societies and exhibits art with the Knoxville Watercolor Society. Lee has been inspired by workshops with many well-known artists including Paul Jackson, Brenda Swenson, Soon Y Warren, Ted Nuttal, Lian Quan Zhen, Cheng Khee Chee, Kathleen Conover, Mary Whyte, Charles Reid, and others.

Class Content: Shelley will be sharing many techniques to create luminous, layered color full works with all supplies included. This fun workshop will be for those who have used the highly pigmented inks before or taken a class. First half of workshop we will loosen up with flowing florals on a non-porous surface, Yupo. The second half will be textures, stencils and other surfaces to explore. Shelley will be bringing her framed inks that have been shown in galleries and art shows as well as reprints of sold works. Please wear work clothes or a smock and bring a lunch and drink. Shelley will have snacks.

Biography: Shelley Mangold is a teaching artist, renting studio space in Knoxville’s Fourth and Gill neighborhood. She has a BA in Art from Adelphi University and an MS in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Tennessee. A long-time potter and former public school elementary gifted education and art teacher, she now teaches adult mixed media and alcohol ink techniques. Her work has been shown and sold locally at The Emporium, Arts in the Airport, A1LabArts, Fountain City Art Center, TVUU Church, and Broadway Studios and Gallery.
My current work reflects my diverse interests, which lends itself to my combination of painting, printmaking and collage. Using one or more of these techniques: alcohol ink painting, citra etching papers, rusted papers; I create my own papers. These papers along with occasional found objects and natural ephemera become my palette.

Class Content: Learn the French technique called Picassiette, or Pique Assiette, which uses broken dishes. This folk-style method is a great way to create a mosaic from a piece of family china or a thrift store treasure. Students will learn how to use hand tools to break the china for their design. The center photo is a “sampler” of different parts of one teacup and how to achieve many looks from the various pieces. Participants will complete a 6”-8” piece of art by the end of class.
Supply List: All tools and materials are included but students are encouraged to bring something sentimental to include if they wish.
Biography: Susan Watson is a traditional stained glass artist who started her mosaic journey 12 years ago after taking a stone cutting class in Pennsylvania. Since then, she has studied under mosaic masters all over the world.
