Class Content: Discover the rich, layered beauty of encaustic painting in this one-day workshop with artist Deborah Llewellyn. Perfect for beginners and experienced artists alike, this hands-on class explores the fusion of molten wax with mixed media techniques to create luminous, textured works of art.

We’ll begin with a focus on safety and studio setup, then dive into the materials— including how to make your own encaustic medium and understand the different wax-based products we’ll use. Students will learn how to prep and tape panels, apply base layers of wax, and use pottery tools for carving and texture.

You’ll work confidently with a blow torch to fuse layers and explore the creative possibilities of alcohol inks, shellac, and dry pigments. Deborah will also demonstrate how to embed photographs, add visual interest through mark making, and embrace happy accidents as part of the artistic process.

Each student will work on two 10-inch square wood panels, which are included along with most other supplies. Please bring a blow torch and any personal images or collage elements you’d like to incorporate. You’ll leave with completed work and a solid foundation in encaustic and mixed media techniques.

You are invited to change things up a bit by pairing Zentangle with different pens as well as mixed media techniques and materials to create a lovely composition on a traditional paper surface as well as a translucent background. We will focus on the Zentangle “embedded letters” technique, but instead of letters, our projects will incorporate the dragonfly as a focal point–it could be stamped, stenciled, embossed or collaged…you choose! A glass-backed frame is included with the class so that light can travel through your translucent piece as it would through the delicate wings of a dragonfly. Color might be incorporated into your creation if you wish, as a subtle hint or a bolder statement.

Supply List: Sakura Pigma Micron pens in Black, Cool Gray, and Light Cool Gray…size 01 (for a fine line) or size 05 (for a medium line). All three should be the same size; which size you choose should be based on your personal preference. If unable to purchase before class, instructor will have sets on hand for purchase at $10 for a set of 3 (black, cool gray, and light cool gray) of the same size in a Zentangle pen pouch.

All other necessary supplies are provided in the cost of the class. Participants are welcome to bring additional favorite pens and colored pencils/chalk pencils if they wish.

Biography: Amy Broady, M.Ed., is a Certified Zentangle Teacher™ and a Veriditas-trained Labyrinth Facilitator. She began her career as a professional art educator in 1995. She has spent most of her school career teaching at the elementary level, but loves teaching adults just as much as she loves teaching children. She started practicing and teaching the Zentangle Method in 2010 to children in the school setting and adults in various community venues as well as at retreats and conferences; she has provided professional development to countless art educators at the local, state, and national levels. Amy is delighted that Zentangle permeates her personal and professional life, creatively, philosophically, and socially as she has made dear friends through her involvement with Zentangle. In 2022 she established her own tiny little art studio, Pen & Path, for helping others begin or progress on their creative journeys through mixed media adventures in Zentangle, labyrinths, and more. Amy doesn’t sell her artwork and rarely displays it in public venues, but derives great joy and satisfaction from her personal practice as well as teaching others.

Biography: Ginger Oglesby, a native Southerner, began studying art in the 6th grade. Saturday mornings were spent in art class learning the fundamentals of drawing, color, composition and medium. In the summer, classes were moved outside for landscapes at Nashville’s Belle Meade Mansion. This continued all through high school under the tutelage of Juanita Green Parks, Director of Art, at Watkins Institute in Nashville, TN. Ginger’s education continued to be concentrated in creative endeavors. She received a BFA from the University of Tennessee in Studio Art with a minor in Dance. After college, Ginger’s first job was with a modern dance company, Sidewalk Dance Theater, where she was a member for ten years. Retiring from the dance company, Ginger missed the movement of dance so she poured movement into her paintings. Her work became more loose and free until they became pure abstraction.

Ginger creates dynamic abstract paintings. She allows movement of color, line, form, tone and texture as they interact to be the subject of her paintings. She has the ability to suspend reality and trust her intuition as she creates abstract paintings that result in primitive arrangements of color and shape. Art critic, Brian Sherwin, commented on Ginger’s paintings.
“Ginger’s energetic use of color demands attention. Ginger meshes fiery colors with colder colors, if you will- works that are complex in their simplicity. A startling exchange of color is established. That visual choice reflects Ginger’s connection with order/chaos of nature.”

Ginger prefers not to guide the viewer’s interpretation, rather she captures the viewer’s attention, draws them in, keeps them looking and generates an emotional response. “I use the canvas to tell the bold and sometimes very subtle abstract stories of movement. Beginning with a loose composition and adding layer on layer, my paintings naturally unfold and expose an intuitive dance. These images capture the vibrant attitudes of the human heart. Soaring Leaping Turning!”
