Class Content: In this class you will learn the basics for making coiled baskets from yarn and paracord. By the end of the class, you will have completed your first coiled basket. My goal is not to teach you how to copy what I do, but to give you the skills and knowledge to make this craft your own by using the skills I teach you with your creativity and imagination.
In the first session you will learn how to select a yarn that will work well for a coiled basket and will start the base of an oval basket. Your “homework” will be to finish the base of your basket before the next session.

In the second session you will learn how to build the sides and how to shape them. We will discuss how to make very symmetrical basket as well as how to make asymmetrical baskets. Your “homework” will be to finish the sides of your basket before the next session.

In the final session you will learn how to embellish your basket with a simple coil and how to end the coil. We will discuss how to begin a round basket and other embellishment techniques, as well as how to create lids for your baskets.
I will provide my contact email at the beginning of the class so that you can contact me between sessions if you have any questions about your “homework.” I also provide a handout with tips and tricks, and references including some of my preferred yarn suppliers.

I will provide all supplies, including enough paracord to make a medium sized basket. To ensure that the yarn you use works well for a coiled basket, I will bring a large selection of yarn for you to choose from.

Supply List: All supplies included

Biography: Home | Bunny Creek Baskets and Beads

Instructor Website: Linda is self-taught, so has learned to use her imagination and creativity to design and create her coiled baskets. She is always wondering “what would happen if I…” and “how could I make it look like…” She will try anything to see if it works and has developed a wide range of techniques that make her coiled baskets unique. Linda loves to focus on using color, texture, and design to create a sense of movement in her work.
Linda is a juried member of the Foothills Craft Guild.

Biography: Tennessee artist Carol Robin King was born and raised in Argentina where she discovered her love for drawing at the tender age of 3. At 13, Carol advanced from drawing to painting with oils and acrylics. While in Argentina, she attended 3 years of professional Art School. She loves continuing to learn and perfect her techniques through workshops and online classes. Art has always been a part of Carol’s life. She made extra money selling paintings as a child and painting portraits in college. Throughout the last 30 years, she has had the privilege of teaching art classes for children and teens as well as adults.

Carol also captures attention with her 3D wall sculptures. Working with cast stone and gypsum, these dimensional bas relief works not only catch the eye but awaken the senses as the shapes emerge – revealed by reflected light.

“Quiet times, pleasant memories and peaceful places are what I strive to capture in my art to bring the viewer a moment of peace in a hectic day or a pleasant memory to lift their spirit.”

Current projects are recording online video Watercolor lessons, teaching acrylic classes and working at the shared Studio 106 located inside the Emporium in the downtown Knoxville art district. Her work can also be found at Pivot Point Gallery in Knoxville, and she just opened a gallery with a couple other artists in Gatlinburg Tennessee in the Morning Mist Village on Glades Road. We hope you can stop by and visit at one of these locations!

Done in Toulouse-Lautrec style the women looked down upon the city as they did in the late 18th century.

Later the windows were all auctioned off to benefit Knox Heritage. Along with her mural and faux work Christian has taught privately through the years. She has been fortunate to have seen some of her students obtain scholarships and become successful artists on their own. Cancellation Policy: Participants may cancel up to 30 days prior to the start of the Workshop. There will be no refunds within 30 days of the workshop. If AGTV or the instructor cancels the workshop, participants will get a full refund. To cancel, fill out the workshop refund request form

Workshop Content: This workshop offers a new way to look at the art of weaving. Using watercolor paper, acrylic paint, collage material and waxed linen thread, participants will create an abstracted image that will lead to an exploration of an unusual design and application of this time-honored craft.

Day one: The morning will start with an introduction and slideshow of various paper weavings and the materials we’ll be using. A short demo using recommended methods will highlight two different approaches to the base art of the weaving using paint and/or collage. A discussion of what type of imagery participants will be pursuing, editing methods and how this will fit with a paper weaving process will follow—the instructor will talk this through in detail with each participant individually as needed. After lunch, participants will begin their desired image on watercolor paper—this can be approached as an acrylic painting, a collage or both combined.

Day two: Participants will continue to build their main image and focus on the heroic area of the base art composition as the focal point—attention will focus on how the base art image will be cut up and rearranged in the building of the weaving. After lunch participants will be using the editing methods discussed earlier to finish out the base image. By midafternoon we will cut the paper abstract into strips and begin to rearrange the image to produce the warp and weft of the final weaving.

Day three: Starts with two short demonstrations: one on using the Japanese hand drill and one using the simple pamphlet stitch for the weaving. This will be followed by an exercise of each approach that each participant will practice. After lunch participants will screw punch their weavings and stitch them together. The class will end early to allow for pack up.
This class will offer attendees an abstracted view of weaving with paper and broaden their approach in letting an image go to create something new. Attention will be paid to building the image organically and simplifying the weaving process.
This is a 3 day, adults only class and attendees will need to be familiar with wet media—acrylic paint and inks or collage. A knowledge of sewing or stitching will be very helpful but not necessary.
We will need to work flat for most of the painting and weaving process.

NOTE: A more detailed explanation will be emailed to all the participants for preparation at least 2 weeks before the workshop.

Biography: Ginger Oglesby, a native Southerner, began studying art in the 6th grade. Saturday mornings were spent in art class learning the fundamentals of drawing, color, composition and medium. Ginger’s education continued to concentrate on creative endeavors. She received a BFA from the University of Tennessee in Studio Art with a minor in Dance. After college, Ginger’s first job was with a modern dance company, Sidewalk Dance Theater, where she was a member for ten years. Retiring from the dance company, Ginger missed the movement of dance, so she poured movement into her paintings. Her work became looser and freer until they became pure abstraction.

Artist Statement:
“I love the way the world moves around me. Its beauty and vitality inspire me. My abstracts give visual life to the emotion, knowledge, and energy that I feel. Painting is a very physical process for me. I try to keep the painting open to all possibilities as I move around the canvas with marks, patterns, textures, and colors. I begin with a loose gestural composition and add layer on layer. I am open to all possibilities where its outcome is not yet known, and anything can happen. I use the canvas to tell bold and sometimes very subtle abstract stories of movement. My paintings naturally unfold and expose an intuitive dance. These images capture the vibrant attitudes of the human heart. Soaring, Leaping, Turning!”
