Scarlett Hanover, Graduate of Middle Tennessee State University in Graphic Design and Illustration, will give a complete demonstration discussing the pros and cons, best uses and ideal substrates for some of the best art markers available.  You will have the opportunity to try the markers too.

Marabu Graphix Aqua Pens: Versatile watercolor pens in a vibrant array of colors. The high-quality inks are bright and low odor. Draw or color lines and solids as you would with any marker, or blend and spread the color with a damp brush for paler hues and lovely shading.

Copic Creative Art Markers:  Durable graphic markers which are alcohol-based, refillable and available in various designs and in 358 colors to suit individual needs

Tombow Dual Brush Pens: The flexible brush tip works like a paintbrush to create fine, medium or bold strokes; the fine tip gives consistent lines. The water-based ink is blendable and the resilient nylon brush retains its point stroke after stroke.

Faber Castell Pitt Artist Pens: the Pitt Pen has all the advantages of artist’s inks with the benefits of a modern, easy-to-use pen. The pigmented and very lightfast drawing india ink is ideal for sketches, drawings, layouts, fashion design and illustration.

Faber Castell Albrecht Dürer Watercolor Markers: These watercolor markers are a high-quality drawing instrument that supports both spontaneous sketching and artistic watercolour painting. Perfect for painting on the go.

Uni’s Posca Paint Markers:  Richly pigmented opaque ink markers which can mark on almost any surface with vivid colors that dry to a matte finish. The acrylic paint is non-toxic, lightfast, waterproof, and weather-resistant in 55 colors.

220602 Collage with Magazines: On the Face of Things with Kathy Payne

Art Guild of Tellico Village

Dates: June 2-4, 2022
Time: 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM
Location: Chota Classroom A

Prerequisites: Desire to experiment and have fun!

Contact Information: Kathy Payne, reachkpayne@gmail.com

Cost: Member $120, Non-Member $155
Class Size: Min 6 Max 16
Sign-up: Registration is closed
Deadline: May 5th, 2022

Workshop Content: Learn to create faces and figures from bits and pieces of magazines and collected papers.  No drawing experience is necessary. You can do this!

Day one: Learn various ways to create faces and figures using magazines as a source of inspiration, imagery, and composition. We’ll start with quick, intuitive exercises to relax the mind while learning the basics. Begin with an image or idea that inspires you and create a composition around it using magazine images as the backbone. Develop a purpose-driven palette of artful papers from magazines, deli paper, tissue, and paint for use in developing your collage.

Day two: Learn to paint directly onto a collage to personalize the images and develop the composition.

Day three: will be reserved for completing your work. Kathy will share tips on finishing, sealing, and displaying your masterpiece.

Supply List: Click here for supply list.

Biography: I love to create with paper — cut, torn, sliced, ripped, painted, and reassembled. I am particularly drawn to the look, color, texture and malleable nature of torn magazines and painted papers. Images originally meant to convey one message in a magazine can be used to communicate something entirely new in a work of art. An automobile advertisement might become part of a face. A face might become part of an abstract image. Disparate images can be used to tell a story or to extract personal meaning. Discovering hidden images embedded in collage creates a mystery that I simply can’t resist! I have been collaging for 15 years and never grow tired of it. Come explore with me.

COVID Protocol: Masks requested when social distancing is not possible.

220401 Collage with Magazines for Beginners with Kathy Payne

Art Guild of Tellico Village

Dates: April 1st – 2nd, 2022
Time: 9:00AM to 4:00PM
Location: Chota Classroom A

Prerequisites: Desire to have fun!

Contact Information: Kathy Payne, reachkpayne@gmail.com

Cost: Members $95, Non-Members $130
Class Size: Min 5 Max 16
Sign-up: Class is full. Contact Kathy directly to see if you can be added.
Deadline: March 26th

Cancellation Policy: Enrollments and cancellations must be received by March 26th.

Workshop Content:

Create fun new images from bits and pieces of magazines. We’ll start by mining magazine pages to build palettes of color, texture and shape. Learn to create abstract images, landscapes, faces, and figures from torn pieces of paper. Use subtle imagery to tell a story, extract personal meaning, or simply create for fun!

Day one: learn about the tricks of the trade — how to use magazines as your source of color, drama, and texture and which substrates, products and tools work best. We will review the work of contemporary collage artists to observe techniques and find inspiration. You will create several forms of collage papers for use in future work. While your papers dry, you will create an abstract composition from magazine parts alone. This will be quick, intuitive work. Finally, you will use your morning papers to build an abstract collage focusing on color and texture.

Day two: learn how to compose a more complex image from magazine parts. We’ll review examples of collage landscapes, figures, and still life and discuss the mechanics of composing an image. Artists may choose an image of their own or follow Kathy’s lead to create this more complex image. Along the way, learn techniques for reducing wrinkles and bubbles, crutches for refining an image, methods for adding shading and values, and ideas for working in the negative spaces.

Supply List:

Primary art materials will be provided (e.g. substrates, glue / medium, craft brushes)

Please bring scissors, 2-3 good quality magazines (e.g. fashion, architecture, National Geographic) and two plastic containers for rinse water. Optional: Acrylic paint, markers / pens, random paper images you would like to include in your collages (e.g. interesting papers, photocopies of old photos or letters, poems, maps, etc.).

March 17, 2022 – 10:00 AM Marianne Woodside

Art Guild of Tellico Village

Photography: Evolution of Ideas

Join us as Marianne Woodside shares her photographs each illustrative of specific subjects, techniques, and creative contexts of her photography.  She will introduce topics that include photographing glass, manipulating images, and capturing images during travel.  She will also discuss learning in a workshop setting, establishing a body of work (e.g. home place, wildlife, and birds), and establishing partnerships.

Marianne is known for her use of color and light, and her emphasis on creative approaches to digital photography. Embedded throughout the presentation will be themes of surprise, joy, creativity, and learning as Marianne traces the evolution of her work from its beginning to the present date.

About the Artist: Marianne Woodside spent her early years in Orange, Texas. At the age of 17, she moved with her family to Kuwait City graduating from the International School of Kuwait in 1966. She then left to attend college at the Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas. Subsequently, she earned a a Masters in Counseling and Curriculum Studies at the Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio. She then moved to Blacksburg, Virginia where she studied Counselor Education and graduated with an Ed.D. in 1974. Marianne’s long professional career has included professorships in Teacher Education, Human Services, and Counselor Education at Virginia Tech, the University of Wyoming, and the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.

It was during Marianne’s years in Wyoming that she developed an interest in photography. There, she developed a love for the wide-open spaces of the plains and the rugged Rocky Mountain vistas. After her move to Knoxville about 10 years ago, she was mystified as to how to photograph the flora and fauna of East Tennessee, especially the dense wilderness of the Appalachian Mountains. Today the perplexity has turned to a deep appreciation of the East Tennessee landscape and the photographic opportunities it offers. Travel to Central America, South America, the United Kingdom, Europe, and Iceland have offered additional opportunities to capture exotic photographs beyond her daily experiences. More recently, an interest in photographing glass has provided Marianne another way of expressing the relationship between man-made objects, nature, light, and color.
