Workshop Content: Learn how to create a painting using a painting knife from start to finish! Knife painting requires the artist to “let go” of details. Thick application of paint resulting in a heavily textured surface known as impasto painting. We’ll explore the ways that impasto texture affects lights and shadow on the surface of your painting. Acrylic paints lend themselves to knife paintings because they dry quickly and prevent accidental muddying of colors, keeping them bright and clear.

The painting will be done in stages that Terry will demonstrate. Individual instruction will be provided as needed. Working from a reference photo you’ll create an under painting, and then learn to apply the paint using various painting knives.

Supply List: No personal supplies are needed – Artist is providing all materials and supplies.
Students will be provided with all supplies and materials, these include all paint, a16x20′ canvas, 3 metal painting knives, disposable pallet, table easels, water containers and paper towels.
The only thing enrolled artists should bring to class is their courage!

Biography: Terry is a native Tennessean, born in Knoxville in 1944, growing up on a farm, and backpacking into the mountains has developed his love for the land and its beauty. He has pursued an interest in art since childhood and has painted professionally for over 50 years. His paintings are personal statements of his feelings for nature. Class Content: Come paint your pet with me! I realize the samples are my portraits that I do and I’ve been painting for decades and I obviously spend more than 4 hours on them but you can have fun and I can help you paint your pet in this fun class! This will be a Head Only class for simplicity and if you have a clear picture with good lighting that will help you make the best looking portrait! If you don’t have a pet, do one for family or pick an animal you would like to paint, like the horse you ride at the stables.

I will walk you through the steps I use to paint my pet portraits and help you with yours. From the under-wash to the finished portrait we will go step by step. It won’t be as detailed as my samples, due to time constraints, but it will be long enough to paint a good likeness. I recommend mouth closed pictures since teeth and tongues are quite difficult and time consuming to paint and may cause you frustration.

PHOTO NEEDED before class: Please email or snail mail me a copy of the image you want to use. Head only shot that is clear so I can zoom in for detail if necessary. Please call me if you have questions on what picture to use. If you want to send me 3 or 4 and ask me which I think is best, I’m happy to help you choose. If you choose to snail mail me the photo, I can scan the image and bring your original back. Having the outline pre-printed is essential to be able to get this painted in the time we have. tip: when emailing, send the full size image, don’t let your email reduce the image size.

I hope you give this a try. It will be fun! I’m excited to do this class with you!

Supply List: Click here to view the supply list. NOTE: If you do not have time to buy the paints before class, I will loan my paint.  Fee is $5 and you can pay cash at class for using my paints.

Class Content: Drawing/Painting 103: One-Point Perspective!!

How to DRAW and PAINT using ONE-POINT PERSPECTIVE
(the art method that converges lines onto one single vanishing point that creates depth and proportion in a drawing/painting).
Beginners and Intermediate

Let’s have fun learning this skill. Learning this will improve our drawings; watercolor, acrylic, oil paintings; colored pencils, and any medium we use…even collage and photography. When we have our perspective off in our artwork it can throw our whole painting out of whack. But when we learn the skill and get it right it pulls everything together.

Hands-on Class: Graphite and Watercolor.
After a short lesson, we will put our learning into practice. This class will be a step-by-step learning of how to draw depth with using converging lines, one vanishing point, and the horizon line in drawing, and then we will create a one-point perspective in color/painting which will give a very different feel when it comes to this technique. We will see how to create city or farm scenes, beach or hiking paths, bridges, or tight ropes.

The class development is as follows:
1/3 of the class learning the technique
1/3 of the class practicing this technique with graphite (pencil)
1/3 of the class practicing this with paint (no experience with paint necessary)

Supply List: All supplies included in the class fee

She has also taught art in an Art Therapy setting. She enjoys just about every medium of Art that is out there. Presently, she is creating art in watercolor, oils, and graphite predominantly.
She has exhibited her artwork in numerous settings from Fine Arts shows and sales including the Brentwood Academy show in Nashville, Memphis College of Art, and in smaller settings in Knoxville and Morristown. She has created murals here in Knoxville as well as in Greece, Belize, and Jordan.
She has lived in Nashville, Knoxville, St.Louis, Memphis, and the country of Jordan.
