Class Content: Have you always wondered about Stained Glass? During this fun and informative class, you will learn the entire “Tiffany” or copper foil method of creating stained glass from start to finish. All equipment and supplies are included. There will be several design patterns to choose from, and a selection of colored glass will be provided. You will trace the patterns, cut and prepare the glass, solder the pieces together and go home with a finished piece, all in three hours!

Supply List: Instructor will provide all materials and supplies

Biography: With a BA in Interior Design from Kent State University, Marc has enjoyed creative outlets most of his life, whether generating Frank Lloyd Wright inspired designs in paint, as floor treatments, or devising intricate designs for stained glass compositions. The college curriculum while design oriented, was also focused on architecture and fine art, including numerous drawing, visual organization, and construction technology courses, which have all added to the depth of Marc’s design acumen. In the mid-1990’s, Marc fulfilled a longstanding desire to learn Stained Glass techniques. Early on, Marc’s secondary career as a Stained Glass artist took the turn toward utilization of repurposed and reimagined materials and he has never looked back. In fact, many of his commissions feature unusual glass items or materials as their focal point, and it is these reimagined elements that serve as the inspiration for a given piece. He is a firm believer that Stained Glass is a complex hybrid of art and craft, requiring artistic creativity to design a composition and select the appropriate glass colors, patterns, and textures. It then takes the skills of a craftsman to fabricate the designed composition.

In 2013, with the opening of F.L.A.V.O.R. Studio in upstate NY, Marc realized a lifelong dream to have a dedicated art/work space, which not only allowed for an improved studio environment, but also provided a creative atmosphere where Marc could teach Stained Glass Workshops. With his wife, Debbie, Marc, was also responsible for the creation and administration of a county-wide art trail in Steuben County, NY that showcased the amazing art that was being created in that rural county in western NY. Featuring as many as 35 artists during the weekend event each April, attendees could visit each and every studio and artist, to watch live demonstrations, meet the artists in their work environments, and even purchase works to take home. Running for 8 years, the Arts in Bloom Art Trail helped create a community between the local artists and their neighbors and patrons.
Now in Knoxville, Marc and Deb have rebranded their studio from F.L.A.V.O.R. Studio to Master Repurposers to better reflect the inspiration that secondhand materials can bring to their art. His first local exhibit took place in April 2021 at the Fountain City Library, followed up by an exhibit in August at The Emporium with his wife in a joint show. In November, 2021, Marc was not only selected as one of five local artists to demonstrate his process at the United Way ADT Celebration Event, but he was chosen to film a live Stained Glass demonstration for the Discovery+ network for specific broadcast on their youtube channel.

Marc is excited to call Knoxville home, and in his first year as an artist here, he has found great support from both The Maker City and Arts Alliance organizations, and looks forward to creating exciting new collections in the coming year. He encourages you to find him at maker’s markets around the greater Knoxville area and at his home studio in Fountain City.

Cost: $150
Class Size: Min 8 Max 12

Workshop Content: Learn to develop an abstract composition, color palette, and content, as in a raison d’etre, a reason to be. Class participants will learn to plan a composition, to mix intermediate colors, and to select a palette based on color symbolism and preferences. Working with various paint application methods, we will cover the surface of the prepared canvas with color, scraping into the wet shapes to reveal the underpainting beneath. As we work, art elements such as value, color relationships, and line will be selectively incorporated to create an impactful composition. This process is an intuitive approach where the imagery develops over time, each act of painting suggesting the next. Appropriate for both beginners and experienced artists, this class is designed for participants who want to loosen up, take a break from realism, get un-stuck, or simply try abstract painting in an encouraging environment. The class includes demonstrations, lectures, and exercises to illustrate possibilities and to cultivate greater understanding of art and design principles. Sandy offers a lot of individual attention as the paintings evolve.

Supply List:

Acrylic paint
Various brushes, sponge brushes & sponges, painting tools such as palette knives, brayers, scrapers, stamps, and stencils
Gloss medium and gel medium
Two spray bottles, one with alcohol and one with water
Water container, apron, paper towels, sketch paper and pencil
Canvas

Optional:
Gold leaf or other metal leaf
Acrylic paint pens or sharpies

BEFORE CLASS: Prepare your canvas by painting it with one of the following intermediate colors: red-orange, yellow-orange, yellow-green, blue-green, blue- violet, and red-violet. Cover the canvas completely with this color, blending with white. Let this dry, then coat with gloss medium mixed with water.

Starting with a photo for the focal point (bicycle, old window, flowers, barn, lighthouse, etc.) use acrylic paint along with collage, stenciling, stamping, scraping, spattering and other media to integrate the image into a cohesive composition. At least two different pieces will be worked on.
Demonstrations along with individual instruction will encourage everyone to explore their own artistic expression

White gesso, matte medium, white glue, old brush.
2 or 3 – 12×12 inch canvases or you can work on 300 lb watercolor paper.

Photos – You will need a photo image for the focal point of each finished piece so bring several to choose from.

Thick application of paint resulting in a heavily textured surface is known as impasto painting. We’ll explore the ways that impasto texture affects light and shadow on the surface of your painting. Acrylic paints lend themselves to knife paintings because they dry quickly and prevent accidental muddying of colors, keeping them bright and clear.

The painting will be done in stages that Terry will demonstrate. Individual instruction will be provided as needed.  Working from a reference photo you’ll create an under painting, and then learn to apply the paint using various painting knives.

Supply List: All materials, including canvas, paint and painting knives will be supplied by the instructor. Terry also supplies incidentals, like paper towels, water containers etc. also.

Everyone will complete a 16″x20″ canvas, (supplied) during the two days. We’re looking forward to an exciting two days of creativity!

Biography: Terry is a native Tennessean, born in Knoxville in 1944, growing up on a farm, and backpacking into the mountains has developed his love for the land and it’s beauty. He has pursued an interest in art since childhood and has painted professionally for over 50 years. His paintings are personal statements of his feelings for nature. Through his work, thousands of people all over the world have been able to share his inspiring landscapes of Tennessee.

Biography: Judy is an award winning artist in scratchboards, watercolors and acrylic paintings. She earned a B.A. in Creative Arts summa cum laude, and taught art to Grades K-12. She has worked as a commercial artist for over 40 years, moonlighting as a fine artist. Judy became intrigued with scratchboarding in the ‘90s. She discovered it to be an excellent surface for capturing the dramatic lighting, textures and details which have become hallmarks in her realistic artwork.

Judy is an Ampersand Art Ambassador, hand-picked to represent the company which manufactures the scratchboard panels she uses. She is an active member of the International Society of Scratchboard Artists (ISSA) and her work has been featured in their juried exhibitions, with her scratchboard “I Will Twine” awarded 2nd place in the their 2022 Online Exhibition in the Active Division. Judy’s work as a scratchboard artist is featured in a new episode of “Hand Made” on the Tellico Village Network. She is a signature member of several watercolor societies and is a frequent exhibitor in regional and statewide juried exhibitions. Judy continually shares her art passions, encouraging other artists through classes, presentations, demos, videos, and her info-packed blog.
