We will focus on how to choose different watercolor brushes carefully in order to do the specific “jobs” we want the watercolor to achieve, the difference hot press and cold press papers have on the end result, creating paint values, and so much more. We will also learn how to transfer the images we want to paint onto the watercolor paper. Prerequisites: Some previous oil or acrylic experience will make it easier

Contact Information: CarolRobinKing@gmail.com

Class Size: Min 8 Max 18
Sign-up: Registration is closed. Contact Carol to see if you can be added to the class.
Deadline: July 11, 2023

Class Content: Join me in painting a beautiful Smoky Mountain scene with a field of flowers. Learn how to create the smoky mist in the distance and how to let your brush do the work to easily paint bushes and trees and a field of flowers. I will help you make the painting your own . While I paint thinner on the canvas generally, I will show you several techniques so you can paint with more texture if you prefer that. Its about having fun and making it your own! I provide personal assistance around the room as you all create your own special Smoky Mountain landscape and learn techniques to take home and try on some more paintings. Some painting class experience will help, even if it was just a Painting with a Twist class or something like that.

Supply List: Click here to view the supply list.

I will provide a 11×14 canvas for our art piece. I will bring extra brushes as well in case you don’t have a particular size. You will need to bring Acrylic Paints and basic brushes including a half inch Filbert and a 1″ Fan, a script brush and paper towels and a water container to clean brushes. I have several aprons, but just in case we run out, if you have an apron it’s good to have since acrylics will stick permanently to clothing!

The Colors we will be using are: Windsor Yellow (or any bright yellow), Ultramarine blue, Burnt Sienna, Black, White, Bright Orange and Magenta.

TIP: Some acrylic sets at places like Walmart are very thinned down and can be difficult to work with as they do not contain much pigment. I recommend brands like Lukas (mid) and Golden (high) but any sets from Jerry’s Artarama or Dick Blick, Cheap Joes online stores are going to be better quality and you can get great deals on a set so you can keep painting at home. *** If you do not want to buy a set before trying out acrylics, you can borrow mine for a small fee. I will have brushes as well for anyone to borrow.

Biography: Tennessee artist Carol Robin King was born and raised in Argentina where she discovered her love for drawing at the tender age of 3. At 13, Carol advanced from drawing to painting with oils and acrylics.  While in Argentina,  she attended 3 years of professional Art School.  She loves continuing to learn and perfect her techniques through workshops and online classes.

Art has always been a part of Carol’s life. She made extra money selling paintings as a child and painting portraits in college.  Throughout the last 30 years, she has had the privilege of teaching art classes for children and teens as well as adults.
Current projects are recording online video Watercolor lessons, teaching acrylic classes and working at the shared Studio 106 located inside the Emporium in the downtown Knoxville art district.

Workshop Content: Explore a new way to look at and build the art of collage with an eye towards using color, shape, pattern and composition as a means to construct an image that is out of the ordinary mindset of this time-honored medium. Day one will feature an introduction and short demo with the instructor then focus on establishing a color, shape and pattern vocabulary for your area of interest. Day two will have attendees begin their main collage and focus on the heroic area of the composition as the focal point building density with a lot of detail and day three will bring the piece together for the final editing of the image with an eye towards making new compositional connections. The class will end early to allow for a critique of work produced. This class will offer attendees an abstracted view of realism or total abstraction if that is preferred—you’ll get to choose which way you want to go. Attention will be paid to building detail within the image.

Class Content: Hands on Introduction to Watercolor Class; BEFORE YOU BUY SUPPLIES… Is this medium right for you???

Beginning Watercolor: you will be learning about the tools used to create watercolor paintings along with techniques to make it easy to decide if this is a medium you would like to continue with. Just show up… no need to bring any supplies!

This 1-day class will concentrate on understanding the tools in watercolor so you will be able to later sit back and just enjoy the painting process. We are going to learn about watercolor brushes, papers, paints, techniques, supplies and so much more. You will be creating 2 paintings before you need to go out and buy any supplies, so you can see if this is the medium for you.

Learning: I love watercolors! I would love to help you fall in love with it too by answering any questions you have and teaching you knowledge about the supplies and techniques to launch you into this medium. Watercolors are fast, fun and unique. They can be enjoyed so much more if one is able to simplify all its complexities and implement the right tools so it can be user-friendly. This class will cover such things as: What are the differences in brushes? What are different types of watercolor paper? What the difference is between student and professional grade paints, brushes and paper? Is it worth getting the expensive stuff? What is the difference between tube paints and pans? Why is there a white in most student grade paint sets? I see so many “extra” watercolor supplies in the art store many times we get overwhelmed or wonder what we really need? How do I create white on in my watercolor painting? In the class we will be answering questions like these and so much more; I’m excited to teach you what I have learned.

Practice: We will practice transferring images onto watercolor paper. By this, we will be learning how to properly do this and get hands-on in the process. We will go over beginning watercolor techniques along with skills that will carry you on to the next level. You will be practicing these techniques and getting more familiar with how to use watercolors to achieve different goals.

Lunch – We will take a break for lunch, please bring your lunch.

Painting: After lunch, we will be using our transferred drawing and creating a watercolor. I almost always work on two or more watercolor paintings at the same time, so I will teach you why and how as we create a second piece of art to practice more of the skills we learned from the morning. Take Home:
You will be taking home…
(1) The knowledge of how and what supplies you will need to start your watercolor journey
(2) The techniques that can be used with the supplies to achieve what you want with watercolors
(3) Two paintings that begin you on this new journey of a fun medium that can be used just about anywhere

Supply List: Come as you are… No supplies needed for this class! If you have watercolor supplies you would like to use or have questions about them you are welcome to bring them.
