Contact Information: masterrepurposers@gmail.com

Class Content: Have you always wondered about Stained Glass? During this fun and informative class, you will learn the entire “Tiffany” or copper foil method of creating stained glass from start to finish. All equipment and supplies are included. There will be several design patterns to choose from, and a selection of colored glass will be provided. You will trace the patterns, cut and prepare the glass, solder the pieces together and go home with a finished piece, all in three hours!

Supply List: Instructor will provide all materials and supplies

Biography: With a BA in Interior Design from Kent State University, Marc has enjoyed creative outlets most of his life, whether generating Frank Lloyd Wright inspired designs in paint, as floor treatments, or devising intricate designs for stained glass compositions. The college curriculum while design oriented, was also focused on architecture and fine art, including numerous drawing, visual organization, and construction technology courses, which have all added to the depth of Marc’s design acumen. In the mid-1990’s, Marc fulfilled a longstanding desire to learn Stained Glass techniques. Early on, Marc’s secondary career as a Stained Glass artist took the turn toward utilization of repurposed and reimagined materials and he has never looked back. In fact, many of his commissions feature unusual glass items or materials as their focal point, and it is these reimagined elements that serve as the inspiration for a given piece. He is a firm believer that Stained Glass is a complex hybrid of art and craft, requiring artistic creativity to design a composition and select the appropriate glass colors, patterns, and textures. It then takes the skills of a craftsman to fabricate the designed composition.

In 2013, with the opening of F.L.A.V.O.R. Studio in upstate NY, Marc realized a lifelong dream to have a dedicated art/work space, which not only allowed for an improved studio environment, but also provided a creative atmosphere where Marc could teach Stained Glass Workshops. With his wife, Debbie, Marc, was also responsible for the creation and administration of a county-wide art trail in Steuben County, NY that showcased the amazing art that was being created in that rural county in western NY. Featuring as many as 35 artists during the weekend event each April, attendees could visit each and every studio and artist, to watch live demonstrations, meet the artists in their work environments, and even purchase works to take home. Running for 8 years, the Arts in Bloom Art Trail helped create a community between the local artists and their neighbors and patrons.
Now in Knoxville, Marc and Deb have rebranded their studio from F.L.A.V.O.R. Studio to Master Repurposers to better reflect the inspiration that secondhand materials can bring to their art. His first local exhibit took place in April 2021 at the Fountain City Library, followed up by an exhibit in August at The Emporium with his wife in a joint show. In November, 2021, Marc was not only selected as one of five local artists to demonstrate his process at the United Way ADT Celebration Event, but he was chosen to film a live Stained Glass demonstration for the Discovery+ network for specific broadcast on their youtube channel.

Marc is excited to call Knoxville home, and in his first year as an artist here, he has found great support from both The Maker City and Arts Alliance organizations, and looks forward to creating exciting new collections in the coming year. He encourages you to find him at maker’s markets around the greater Knoxville area and at his home studio in Fountain City.

Biography: A devoted watercolorist for over 40 years and a great lover of people and portraiture, Kate Aubrey began drawing while sprawled on the living room floor at age six. Since then, she has graduated to easels, studying with such notable artists as Charles Reid, John Salminen, Stephen Quiller, Ted Nuttall, Don Andrews, Jeannie McGuire, and Lian Quan Zhen. Life has taken her to six states across the USA from Anchorage, Alaska where she picked up her first watercolor brush to the deep, rich artist’s culture of Cape Cod, Massachusetts. While in Alaska, she worked as one of first women in the oil field at Prudhoe Bay, painting in her spare time. It all shows up in her work.

Arriving in Tennessee’s Knoxville area in 2014 to settle (she fervently hopes) for good, Kate teaches watercolor workshops inside and outside of Tennessee. She is a past Vice President of the Knoxville Watercolor Society, as well as a member of the Arts Alliance of Knoxville, the Art Guild of Tellico Village, and the Oak Ridge Art Center. Farther afield, she is a member of the National Watercolor Society with signature memberships in the Northwest Watercolor Society, the Southern Watercolor Society, the Watercolor Society of Alabama, and the Tennessee Watercolor Society. She is also a Master Artist at the Cape Cod Art Center in Massachusetts.

Her work has earned many awards in multiple national and international exhibitions and has appeared in “Watercolor Artist Magazine”, “American Art Collector Magazine”, Artist’s Magazine’s “The Best of Watercolor” (Splash 21 and Splash 22), and the “American Watercolor Weekly” e-zine. When she is not teaching, she and her very large standard poodle can be found in her studio concentrating on her figure and floral paintings with a dash of still life or Apples thrown in. Although, truth be told, the poodle prefers bones…

220916 Watermedia Fall Leaves with Martha Kisling

Art Guild of Tellico Village

Location: Chota Classroom A

Prerequisites: This class is appropriate for beginning as well as experienced artists.

Contact Information: marthakisling@msn.com

Cost: $40
Class Size: Min 6 Max 16
Sign-up: Class is full. Contact Martha for the waitlist.

Cancellation Policy: Participants may cancel up to 14 days prior to the start of the class for a full refund. There will be no refunds within 14 days of the class unless spot can be filled from wait list. Contact Martha directly to cancel.

Class Content:

Use watercolor and/or acrylics to create a fun and colorful painting of fall leaves. Real leaves will be used for stamping along with wet on wet techniques, negative painting, use of white space and unique color schemes to create a dynamic piece of artwork.

The morning will be focused on creating a colorful leaf painting and the afternoon will be used to explore the option of adding collage and mixed media to a second painting.

Demos along with individual help will encourage everyone in their own artistic expression.

Supply List:

Watercolor and/or acrylic paints, brushes, water container, paper towels and pencil. Two 11×15 inch or larger sheets of 140 lb cold press watercolor paper. I strongly recommend Arches watercolor paper for best results with wet on wet and blending techniques. I will have Arches 140 # watercolor paper available for purchase at the class for $3 / 11 x 15 piece.

Bring a small assortment of collage papers along with any oil pastels, Posca pens, metallic paints, ink pens, etc that you already have on hand.

*** Real Leaves – You will want an assortment of leaves in different shapes and sizes, about 6-8 of each type of leaf. Pick them while they are still green because dried leaves won’t stamp well. Put all leaves in a ziplock bag in the freezer until the day of class to keep them fresh and to avoid mildew. More information on all the painting supplies that I like and
recommend at http://marthakisling.blogspot.com/p/painting-tutorials.html

Biography: I’ve been self-employed for most of my working career and have oil painted for about 45 of them.  When Covid made its entrance, I closed my Townsend bed and breakfast for a couple of months and decided to try something new.  In fifty-eight days I wove twenty-four baskets and finished seven oil paintings.  Then I decided to give my shoulder a rest from both weaving and wielding a long brush and started creating alcohol ink paintings.  When my B&B opened back up and I quickly sold the artwork I had created, I sold the B&B and started a new full time career!  What I love about alcohol inks is the vibrancy of the color and the utter spontaneity.  For the most part I rarely use a brush.  Along with selling my artwork on my website, I have fourteen shows scheduled this year and am currently building an art gallery, Gracehill Fine Art and Basketry, in Townsend, TN.

I have been honored with the following recognition and awards:

  • 2021, Award of Merit, Arrowmont’s  Sevier County 20th Biennial Art Exhibition
  • 2022, Inclusion into Arts in the Airport, Arts Cultural Alliance
  • 2022, Inclusion Dogwood to Kudzu, Handweavers Guild of America Convergence Show Knoxville
  • 2022, Award of Merit, TN Craft, 51st Annual Spring Fair, Emerging Makers Tent
